Deflating is difficult at first, but once you are shown how to do it, it becomes second nature. When I went back for my inflation/deflation instruction they gave me a keychain model of the Classic pump with an instruction card attached. Believe it or not that model was very helpful in figuring out where to place your fingers both for the inflation and deflation. Ask for one if you aren't given one.

My pump at first was as hard as a marble the first few times I used it, but it loosens up as you use it. I think that is normal.
