Pulling pump down during healing period?

Postby Bailey » Thu Jun 27, 2019 3:34 pm

Hey guys have you got any suggestions on the best way to keep the pump low in the scrotum while healing? Surgeon told me this week to keep pulling down on pump every time I pee so it will heal on the bottom, otherwise your pump is going to ride up while healing, & make it difficult if not impossible to function properly. I’m having a difficult time knowing if I’ve got the pump or my testicle. My scrotum is very small unfortunately. I do find it easier in the shower to pull on what I think is the pump, but not sure I’m pulling it down or not. Home care nurses said sitting in a hot tub is out because of infection until about 4 more weeks, and by then the pump may have risen to the top. What did you guys do during the healing process to insure your pump stayed on the bottom. Thanks, Bailey

I found it very easy to tell the difference between the pump (valve body), the pump bulb and my testicles.

The pump is hard plastic and angular. The pump bulb is round like my testicles, but does not hurt when I squeeze it. My testicles hurt A LOT if I squeeze them.

Is there something in your question or experiences that do not understand? It seems to me these things were obvious to me. Of course, EVERYTHING hurt a lot at first and the swelling kept me from pulling anything for the first few days after surgery. My observations were made after about a week (which is about where you are right now, I calculate).

Thanks Lost Sheep, I guess the fact that my scrotum is very small & thick skinned makes it difficult in my situation. My anatomy, I’m sure has a lot to do with why I find it difficult. Glad it was easy for you. Thanks, Bailey

Just got a call from my surgeon. He said that I’m 9 days out, so it’s safe to soak in warm water in my bathtub. He said that keeping the pump pulled down is critical to the operation of the pump. He said the incision would be healed enough to not be a risk of infection. Hope this post benefits others who need help in pulling down their pump.

My doc said don't touch it. I specifically asked if I should be pulling it down. At the end of 4 weeks it was attached to my left testicle. Took 4 more weeks in the hot tub twice a day to get them seperated. That dr had been doing them for 30 years but sure had some weird procedures.

At the post-op visit I asked if I was supposed to pull down on the pump during healing. He told me in no uncertain terms "do not pull on the pump, it's located where it's supposed to be". He was exactly right and the pump has stayed centered just touching the bottom of the scrotum.

I think the differing advice is due to different surgical techniques and whether or not the tubing was cut to length for the individual patient. So I guess the best advice is whatever your doctor tells you
