Infections

Postby mouseco » Mon May 15, 2017 3:53 pm

Hi guys,
I'm a long time follower and occasional contributor to the forum but I've never started a thread. So here goes.
We've heard from those with botched implants but very little from those who have suffered with infections. I know the infection rate is very low, but I wonder how those who have been infected have coped.
Hope I get some responses.

Unfortunately,
The implant may have to removed. The incision given time to heal and. another one put in. Surgeons take every precaution to avoid infectious, but they do happen.

As you say, the infection rate is quite low. A forum search here returns over 600 posts that reference implant infection, but very few of these are reporting infections but rather merely mention infection as a possible complication. I can recall reading a handful of posts here (a recent one is here: http://www.franktalk.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7841&start=10) from men who have experienced infections, but not enough to constitute a trend. As dd states above, the remedy is to remove the implant, treat the infection, allow time to heal and recover as necessary and if desired, place a new implant.

I am sad to say, about one month after implant I damn near died from septic shock from massive infection. I do NOT blame the surgeon. He told me that while rare, if you get an infection, it will probably be serious and require the removal of the implant. Mine was removed. He figures in about six months I will be healed enough to try again. Please remember we are talking about one of the dirtiest parts of our body... urine is full of bacteria. I can't wait for round two.

Correction:
Urine is usually quite sterile unless you have some infection of the urinary tract. However, that area of the body does provide excellent conditions for bacterial growth (warm, moist, protected).

I am not sure if urine provides any nutrients promoting bacterial growth.

I just want to set the record straight.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

Correction: LarryAllen points out two errors. See my next post, 6 posts down.

mouseco, I had a pretty serious infection at 6 weeks post-op. I was one day from having the implant removed when I finally got it under control. All the oral antibiotics they were giving me were not working because of my body weight and blood sugar. Once I lost 20 lbs it lowered the blood sugar and the pills did their job. Sorry Lost Sheep, but you are wrong. Check out this link (and there were MANY more. https://www.sciencenews.org/blog/gory-d ... r-rest-you

Not trying to be adversarial but I don't like to be publically corrected publically (especially when the person correcting me is wrong). If I say something, please correct me (in a PM) and then I will correct myself publically.

Larry, I just read the link you gave, and my B.S. alarm went off right away. I see no indication that that alleged periodical is peer reviewed, and it seems to me more of a supplier of shock stuff than anything else. My GP says the only time there are bacteria in my urine is when I have a UTI, and in fact the presence of bacteria in my urine is what defines a UTI. So, who is correct, my GP a genuine licensed MD, or a supposed periodical nobody ever heard of?

Lost Sheep, as far as I am concerned you are correct and you comments should stand.

OK now, everybody go ahead and start calling me names.

Dave, I can only comment on what I read. I did not call a doctor to check the story. My biggest objection is being called out publically rather than a PM where I can check my facts and correct myself. I believe this is common courtesy and respect for all forum members. Except for defending myself, you will never see me do that to anyone. Meanwhile, I am going to do some more research on the subject. Did you notice they said "Evann Hilt of Loyola University of Chicago reported May 18, 2014 at a conference of the American Society for Microbiology" Authors of the report have some pretty impressive titles... E. E. Hilt1, K. McKinley2, E. R. Mueller3, L. Brubaker3, P. C. Schreckenberger2, A. J. Wolfe1;
1Dept. of Microbiol., Loyola Univ. of Chicago, Maywood, IL, 2Dept. of Pathology, Loyola Univ. of Chicago, Maywood, IL, 3Dept. of Obstetrics/Gynecology & Urology, Loyola Univ. of Chicago, Maywood, IL . Notice it says bacteria in LOW LEVELS for people without a UTI. http://www.abstractsonline.com/Plan/Vie ... 8032b8500b

I'm kinda curious as to what the actual facts turn out to be. I suppose it's possible one possible scenario could be that there is normal bacteria but that it's non-harmful so generally ignored.

By the way, if I'm wrong about something you can tell me. I have pretty thick skin. If you tell me in a smart ass way expect a smart ass reply, but still no hurt feelings on my part. I've been insulted by the best in person and nothing that transpires on an internet forum will faze me. Of course I realize not everyone has a similar background or is as inoculated to verbal offences.
