So many surgeon's without empathy

Postby Flexwheeler » Wed Jan 24, 2024 5:23 pm

Hi folks,

In the last years I have visited some implanteers and urologist's in Europe. One thing that wonders me is why most of them show so less empathy and social intelligence. It's like I visit them with a delicate problem so at least just show some understanding.
Most show no sympathy at alll. Maybe I visited just the wrong ones (doesn't want them to name and shame here), or it is a European thing.

Wonder if it is just me. And yes I behave very friendly myself.

I have run into the same attitude in California where a large integrated health organization controls the medical market. Their attitude is very dismissive of ordinary ED.

I think it's because so many doctors are probably high-functioning autists.

I lucked out with Levine, also fantastic guy

But I've certainly run into that with doctors

Some of my father's cancer doctors when he was dying of leukemia were cold bordering on cruel
I was born in 1974. I've had venous leak ED since early 30's, but managed with pde5 inhibitors until mid 40's. I have fairly severe hour-glassing, but no hard plaques. My urologist is worldwide acknowledged expert Dr. Laurence Levine

Mark1974,

I guess when you've seen it so many times you get desensitized.

That or, like I said: high-functioning autists.

Surgeons' primary talent should be to be good with a knife. Good bedside manner is a plus, not a requirement. The only specialty that requires less personality is pathologist.

That’s funny. My ex brother in law is a pathologist. He’s well suited, personality-wise, for doing autopsies. My brother is a doctor too. Definitely lacking in the charm department.

We are lucky to have quite a few good doctors where we live. Although my implant surgeon is good at his craft, he lacks bedside manners and aftercare information. My new urologist is a nice guy. He called me a few days after my bladder surgery and talked to me for 10-15 minutes, more like an old friend than a doc. Guess you have to search for good doctors now, corporate pressures to see X number of patients per hour rules their time. Gone are the days when a doc had his own little practice, they are all being bought out by big corp.
