What was the one thing that made you make up your mind?

Postby AmansinCali » Thu Jul 07, 2022 4:17 pm

What was the one thing that made you make up your mind to get an implant?

I am 77 years old, can't take pills for medical reasons and I'm using Tri-mix with various degrees of success. It is bad enough to have to plan your times for sex, but to have an injection failure in addition to that is really frustrating for both of us.

I got tired of going to uro's who didn't seem to care or just don't know their field very well, so I decided to go to a uro who is about an hour from where I live, specializes in men's reproductive health and does 4 implants a week at a local university hospital. I felt I could establish myself with a top-notch doctor specializing in men's reproductive health then if I ever felt I wanted an implant I was already a patient of this doctor.

We covered some overactive bladder issues I have been plagued with for a year or so and a new prescription for Tri-mix, but when that was done he jumped into the benefits of an implant. He started by saying it is really an easy operation, I put two silicon tubes in your penis, a squeeze pump in your scrotum and a reservoir in your belly, it is an outpatient procedure and it only takes 45 minutes. All your feelings remain the same for you and your partner and the comment I hear the most is "I wish I had done this sooner."

That sounds all well and good...BUT it is MY PECKER and I can't convince myself to go ahead with it. He gave me a Coloplast Titan brochure, he said you and your wife go over this, do as much research as you are comfortable with, call one or both of these patients of mine who have volunteered to answer questions for guys, and we will have a tele-conference a month from now, I want you to have your wife present so you can both ask any questions you want.

Yikes!

Help me out here, what finally convinced you to go ahead and get the implant?

After second priapism…plus loss of length due to tri-mix it was a no brainer.

Worried about someone operating on your dick? Lot better than sticking a needle in…

I had no hesitation going in. It was the best thing for my sex life.

After prostatectomy I had to use Trimix. It worked great about 70% of the time. It also started to burn really bad after sex. We were able to have sex about the same amount in one week as we did in one day before my operation. We also had a hard time taking it on the road when we were away from my house due to the refrigeration issue and my concern that if I had priapism I wouldn’t be able to find treatment. I fully expected to regain my erectile function after the surgery. I gave it almost two years with no progress. The bottom line is that I refuse to not have a functioning penis! One of my favorite things is to wake up my girlfriend in the morning with my erection poking her! That’s not possible with Trimix.

Today marks three weeks since the implant surgery. So far I feel great, it’s been an easier recovery than I expected, and it looks good. I have some numbness on the bottom of my shaft (had a penoscrotal incision) that I’m obviously hoping goes away. I go back for my follow up next Tuesday and I’m hoping there will be some gains in girth and a little length when it’s fully inflated, right now it’s pretty close to the original size. I used a vacuum pump from three weeks after my prostatectomy to the morning before my implant surgery, at least twice a day.

So far I’m really glad I had this done and I’m looking forward to the future.

The last straw for me was that injections stopped working. But even then i waited a very long time to do the implant.

My old urologist didn't seem very sympathetic. I guess he figured that in my late 60's I was old enough to not need sex. Or maybe he didn't like thinking about sexual issues so much. He tried trimix for me and it didn't work very well and he never discussed any alternatives. One day I got tired of never being hard or having sex and decided to change uros. I found a urologist who was part of a "men's sexual health" practice including urology and all things involving male sexuality. I transferred all my history to him including the prostate cancer radiation information, the things I'd tried for ED, everything. His first comment was "Well, you've been through a lot. How's your ED?" It was clear I'd found the right place.

We talked about alternatives, he started me on a higher dosage of a stronger version of trimix, but told me I probably would need an implant. We discussed what that was and I did research, finding FT along the way. Very glad I changed doctors and that the new guy was open to all the possibilities. I believe I tried every option that was open to me at the time, and when the implant was the only thing left, the decision wasn't too hard. I admit I did a LOT of research, though. I'd looked at the surgery videos and didn't want any doctor doing that to my dick. Ultimately very glad I made the decision and went ahead. I also researched the different doctors, types of implants, surgical methods, everything I could find.

At the last moment, as I was laying in the bed getting ready to be rolled into the OR I had a final "What am I doing???" thought, but fell asleep before I could do more than just that one thought.

Great result, love the implant, glad I made the decision. I hope you can be as happy with the decision you make as I am with mine.

The moment I found out I was eligible to get an implant, my decision was made. The only reason it took 14 months to get the operation was that I wanted be certain I had the right surgeon.

Having had erectile difficulties for decades and at the last, erections that would not endure long enough for vaginal penetration (much less partner satisfaction), I decided to go from oral medications straight to an implant. I skipped constriction rings, vacuum erection devices (VED), urethral suppositories and injections as unsatisfactory for any number or reasons.

Many men have moments (or days or a couple of weeks) of "buyer's remorse" (The "what the f*** did I DO to myself period). I had not one instant of that. Having done research and gone ahead with care I KNEW I was making the right choice.

The one thing: If the implant failed, I would be losing next to NOTHING in the way of sexual satisfaction. And I had everything to gain, especially partner satisfaction. (Note: I had become fairly skilled at cunnilingus with fellatio being an adequate return of the favor. Oral sex for both partners is satisfactory for many women, but still not genuinie coitus, nor is fellatio from her.)

Having a younger active wife kept me trying anything and everything to maintain our sex life. ED started in my mid-50's and it was depressing to lose it during sex. Started Viagra, worked good for a while then between the side effects and failures it was like going through ED again. Injections worked for a while, but failures and side effects again. Our sex life became mutual masturbation sessions which was not very satisfying. The night the wife told me she couldn't do it like that anymore crushed me. My depression ran from will she find another man to I'm not a man anymore deepened.
She is a saint though, stuck with me and we took an anniversary trip to Vegas. Out there a newspaper ad for an implant doctor gave me the answer, since I never knew about implants. Took a couple years to save up my co-pay, but finally got implanted. Healing for me was tough, but now I can't say enough good about it. We are happy being able to maintain our intimate times, any time we want. Pills and injections made sex planned, a real turn off.

Thank you so much gentlemen, those of you who have had the surgery know what a guy goes through trying to make the decision. You know it is not an easy decision, it is nice to know the thought processes you have gone through getting to where you are. I know I will not be the only one who benefits from your posts.

Alot of this is like I am.
No marathon sex, but 5 or 6 times a week isn't bad
When I first went to my uro to ask about injections he immediately suggester an implant.
I thought it was a money grab (and maybe it was), but after several years of tri and quad mix, they stopped working and off we went to implantville.
Never think you're too old for it if sex is still a possibility.
