Patel or Yafi?? Southern California here

Postby kjcustoms » Sun Feb 01, 2026 5:57 pm

I went to go see Dr. Yafi initially and he had me talked me into Coloplast Titan. Really excellent visit, informative and kind. I also more recently saw Dr. Patel in San Diego after read some posts about TEP which is does offer. He recommends Coloplast Titan for TEP, but in my situation after discussing the issues and the possible gain of anywhere from 1-3 cm at the expensive of a lot of risks (infection, longer recovery, etc), i'm deciding against it. He did make a plug about the AMS implant instead which I found very intriguing and am going back and forth between which implant to choose (leaning more towards AMS now) Thankfully many many posts and threads on that topic already.

My main question is how do you decide between two very amazing surgeons? Both are high volume, patient, very knowledgable. Both take my insurance. Both are about equidistance to my home.

Any thoughts?

Hey,
I can't answer your question but I'm in the San Diego area as well. Due to my recent mishap was going to see Dr Patel. Made an appointment but cancelled it. Decided better to stick with Dr Karpman. He understands my situation. I did see Dr Gelman at UCI on Friday of the week it happened hoping it was some easy fix. It wasn't. Gelman wasn't very encouraging either. Said I should consider leaving it like it was.

I'm on the other side of the world, so have no experience with either, but when faced with a similar dilemma I had no trouble deciding.

The two surgeons I consulted had completely different offerings. Titan vs AMS, infrapubic vs penscrotal etc.
So I went with the guy who wanted to do the job I preferred. (There were some other considerations such as distance, but that was lower priority for me)

Everyone talks about choosing a high volume surgeon, but as soon as you ask them to do something that is not their normal procedure then IMHO they are no longer high volume for you.
