"Average use of a penile implant is considered to be one to two times per week" (Advanced Urological Care).*
Concerning the longevity of the implant, this is how I think they get the 15-to-20-year figure. For those of us who are using it multiple times a day, multiple days of the week, we are most likely bound for a revision within 5 years.
Have a follow-up consultation with Hakky on Monday regarding eventual malleable revision.
Has anyone here who is VERY sexually active had their inflatable beyond 5 years? I'm inflating anywhere from 2 to 4 times a day.

Longevity of Implant in the Very Sexually Active
Longevity of Implant in the Very Sexually Active
40. Implanted July 5, 2024, by Dr. Andrew Kramer, Urology Associates of Cape Cod. AMS LGX, 21cm cylinders + 2cm RTEs. Idiopathic "hard flaccid" ED following bacterial infection. Tried pulse waves, Cialis, TRT, even spinal injections. Nada.
Re: Longevity of Implant in the Very Sexually Active
I was just implanted so I can't answer your question. But I'd like to add that wear-and-tear probably plays a role in longevity. For example :
- are there repetitive motions that rub the tubes against each other excessively ?
- does frequency, or type of sexual activity, put extra stress on the cylinders ?
- are there any activities that spike the PSI (fluid pressure) putting additional strain on the whole system ?
I don't know - but those might impact how long they last.

I imagine that these are all contributing factors. Cycling alone contributes to wear and tear; hence, recommended use is once or twice a week.

Re: Longevity of Implant in the Very Sexually Active
I asked ChatGTP:
How many cycles of inflation and deflation are penile implants tested for?
"Penile implants, particularly inflatable ones, are typically tested for tens of thousands of inflation and deflation cycles to ensure durability and reliability. Most manufacturers, like AMS (Boston Scientific) and Coloplast, test their implants for at least 25,000 to 30,000 cycles in laboratory settings.
This level of testing simulates many years of regular use — for example, if someone uses the implant once a day, 30,000 cycles would represent over 80 years of use. These rigorous standards are in place to minimize mechanical failure and ensure long-term function."
My understanding is the pump isn't the usual cause for failure but rather tubing and connections.
Not stating that as fact...just my understanding.
I personally don't worry about it and enjoy my life and bionic penis. When it fails....I'll get a revision.
I've already had a revision and the recovery is much easier.
Worrying about it won't change the lifespan.

PowerliftingDad, I agree with your perspective.
The ChatGPT info sounds like another swing-and-a-miss for AI if its intended to set expectations. Or, maybe in the lab there's zero friction while testing which is why the numbers are not applicable to real-world use.

I wouldn't necessarily trust the "lab tests" as it's not the same as real world use. This would be the same as saying "we tested our car in a perfectly smooth road going just straight for 200.000 miles and it didn't break". But what happens when you test it in a real world road with holes, bumps, hard turns.
At the end of the day these are mechanical devices and can fail eventually with use. I know many people from this forum and outside who got their implants replaced in under 3 years (all brands)

Re: Longevity of Implant in the Very Sexually Active
I don't believe that using your implant dramatically affects its lifespan. We have a longtime member that had a stroke during his recovery period. This stroke made him lose his desire for sex. He would inflate his implant occasionally because his surgeon had suggested it. Sometimes a few months between inflations. Well guess what happened? His implant failed & he never had sex or masturbated. Remember he lost all desire for sex due to the stroke.
Get an implant & don't be afraid of using it. Your choice of surgeon & maybe the model of IPP you choose might be your best indicator of your implants lifespan in my opinion.
Prior to my IPP. I was contacted by several previous patients of my dr. So far I have not read of a patient of his having a revision nor has any of the previous paitents that I know of have had a revision. Yes, he does a good IPP volume. Around 200 a year. But he only uses one brand.
I had a discussion with his assistant about his revision rate. She said he does do revisions but they were nearly always done by other drs. Best she could remember. His last revision of his own implant was around 3 years prior to my surgery.

Re: Longevity of Implant in the Very Sexually Active
I had a consult with Hakky last month, and asked him a similar question. His response was (paraphrased) that the implant is made to be used, so use it as often as you want. He didn't think cycling really wore anything out.
He did say that it's you're really rough on it, like super rough sex where you could bend the cylinders, that might shorten the life. Also "hyper-inflation", where you get both hands on the pump and squeeze as hard as you can to every drop in there, puts a lot of pressure stress on the components. Leaving it spun up to full hardness overnight as a habit was also on his list of bad practices.
But for normal use he had no reservations about using it multiple times a day.

58yo in good shape looking at Coloplast Titan. Tri-Mix still works but is a drag.

Interesting that he didn't like leaving the implant inflated all night. I wonder if that applies for 50-70% inflation though? I don't think i could even sleep with a 100% inflation, but i have tried sleeping with a partially inflated implant to get a soft stretch during the night

He said you could do that occasionally, but night after night would stress things. I mean you have components designed to be under pressure for maybe up to an hour at a time, and you're leaving them that way for 8+ hours, every night. Bound to weaken something.
I would think partial would be okay, it's just that continuous high pressure that's a problem. He did tell me the Cylinders on a Coloplast could reach 1500psi. That's insane pressure, like nearly pressurized scuba tank pressures. If it was a gas instead of liquid, people could get hurt in an implant failure!
