How long after implant surgery can you return to physical activity?

Postby personfromon » Wed Mar 23, 2022 2:12 pm

Title says it all!

I'm a 30 year old who is going to be getting an implant surgery done within the next few weeks. I am pretty active currently--heavy resistance training 3-4x a week and skateboarding ~3 or 4x a week (as weather permits ;)).

Does anyone have any info on how long post surgery until I can return to those activities? For that matter I WILL be able to still do those activities with my implant, correct? Has anyone been limited physically by their implant? I'm a bit worried it might impact squats/deadlifts when weightlifting or potentially ruin some of my groin mobility which is pretty important in skateboarding.

Any input on this is much appreciated, thanks all!

Dear PF,
What did your doctor/surgeon recommend?
Please, for the best results, do what they say!!! This is a major surgery.
I'm not a doctor, and no, I didn't play one in a movie, BUT, if you do all those exercises, you ain't gonna like the outcome, I guarantee!

While the timeline for complete recovery varies from man to man as do doctors directions, you will be able to return to all of those activities a few weeks following surgery. Do exactly what your surgeon tells you to do.

This will vary greatly depending on the individual. In my particular case, I felt great on day 2 after surgery with just the anticipated bruising and swelling. I decided to go into my office and catch up on things...big mistake! Seems I overdid it and spent the next 2 weeks almost incapacitated in excruciating pain...imagine the feeling of getting kicked in the balls with no relief. After severely limiting my activity, I noticed an improvement on day 14 and each passing day things got a little better. I was able to gently resume weight training after the 1 month mark. Don't let me scare you, just give yourself time to heal. The end result is so worth it!

My doctor's instructions were don't lift anything over five pounds the first two weeks. At my two-week appointment, he gave me the okay to slowly resume my normal level of activity.

I absolutely agree with what the other guys said about following the doctor's instructions. It isn't that long of a layoff, and you can majorly fuck things up in the early stages of healing if you aren't careful.

I will say that I was sedentary for too long the first week after surgery. I didn't do any real length of walking until day 4 after surgery, and I was surprised at how weak I'd become in just a few days.

Also, I haven't felt limited by my implant in terms of what I can do physically.

At three weeks post surgery I eased back into my fitness routine of cardio and body weight exercises. Currently at five weeks and back to normal duration and reps.
