Infection question

My AMS failed after just under 4 years. Revision surgery 10 days ago with titan. No real pain but just started running a low grade fever (normal +2 degrees F). Anybody experienced with infection that can advise other things to look out for? Already advised surgeon but as always things peak on Friday evenings so not expecting response until Monday.

So I would guess that you have completed any oral antibiotics you were on for the surgery? Signs of infection are redness or swelling or discharge at the injection site. Pain is also an indication. And above normal temperature. I am surprised your doctor has not started you or extended oral antibiotic meds.

When I had my repair I had to be in early and they rushed me through to get me back as soon as possible and gave me 2 full bags of IV antibiotic meds before surgery. And they swabbed the fluid in the Pseudo-capsule of all the components they disturbed. I was negative for infection but some men have a lot of infection in the Pseudo-capsule that surrounds the components. As they are sealed this is not a problem unless you have an injury that opens and leaks into the surrounding tissue. This is a reason why infection can occur at any time. And why there is a higher rate of infection for revisions or repairs.

Watch this close and your doctor should have someone on call for them if they are not on call over the weekend. An ER or even minor emergency should be able to contact your doctor or on call doctor if you start having other symptoms and ask for them to start you back on meds as soon as possible.

Thanks for response. I was given IV antibiotics day of surgery and started oral antibiotics 3 days pre surgery which went through 7 days post surgery. No discharge, minor swelling and little pain. I think I might take a Covid test to rule that in or out.

You're wise to be on top of this. Since it sounds like you won't see your doctor until Monday. Perhaps a little personal investigation might help.
Do you or anyone you've had recent contact with have any sinus type issues? Perhaps ask around to see if anyone has fever symptoms. Always a chance that you've picked up a short term bug that seems to run through groups a couple of times a year. A Covid test is a good idea. Have you ate anything that could of been off a little? Any loose stools? Basically what I'm suggesting is to try to eliminate some of the easy things.
I'd suggest that on Monday that you show up in person at your surgeons office. If not possible then see your pcp. It's just way too easy for some flunky staffer that answers the phone to write your name down for the dr & blow you off. Lots harder to do that when your butt is in their waiting room.

My Dr does respond promptly to email through their medical website. Based on the lack of pain and no increase in swelling, she does not think the implant is infected. I hope that is the case but unexplained fever with no other outward symptoms is troubling. She prescribed a new course of antibiotics and I already have my 2 week follow up appointment on this coming Wednesday, so will get a better read then.

Good to hear. My experience with infection related to this surgery is that caught early and treated with antibiotics it is in many cases resolved. And no real down side to another round of meds unless there is a history of it. And most doctors would have had you start another round of meds just to be safe. No harm in most cases if it is not infected and if it is early infection then a really good chance of resolving it.
