prostatectomy when already implanted

Postby ViaSwiss » Tue Jun 01, 2021 1:08 pm

I have the gene that makes you 2x more likely to get prostate cancer. Since starting low dose TRT, my prostate has enlarged and PSA is up to 1.5 from .5.

Someday in the future, decent chance I will need a prostatectomy as I refuse to use Dutasteride or other anti-androgens.

Anyone here had one while they already had an implant in? Will it cause issues?

I guess because of my age, and family history (both sides) of prostate cancer, my surgeon casually threw into one of our conversations that should a prostatectomy ever become necessary, it could be done with my implant.

I would imagine most PR procedures (TURP for instance) are done through a rigid cystoscope although I don't know. There is at least one instance documented in medical papers that I found online where a UroLift procedure was successfully performed on a patient who was previously implanted with an IPP, with no damage to the implant as a result. The UroLift procedure is also performed using a rigid cystoscope so it looks like although more difficult to straighten the urethra during the procedure when a patient has an IPP, it is possible to do so without any concerns for the implant or whether it is even possible.

I was told by my surgeon (urologist) that even with the implant they can access the prostate for resection or removal.
