Implanted 9/30 still have had 3 Catheters and can not urinate on my own
Hello Frank Talk helped ease my concerns pre op and not a terrible amount of pain but after surgery post op I needed to show them I could urinate if not they said we’d have to install Foley Catheter which they did before I left to go home. Was back at their office 2 day post op to have dressing removed and try to remove catheter. They removed which is always painful and gave me 4 hours to try to urinate and I could not so they scanned my bladder and found 1200 ml still in my bladder so they inserted the second catheter and of course it hurt worse than the first time due to irritation of first catheter. Anyway went back day 6 and they removed catheter and left me 5 hours to go and I still couldn’t urinate on my own. So they implanted another catheter ( number 3) and sent me home I am on day 8 and have appointment to have removed again Tomorrow. Very nervous as pain is getting worse due to irritation and having inserted and pulled out 3 times now. If I can’t urinate tomorrow on my own I don’t know what else to do. Dr Wierschem is great and one of the best in DFW but he seems a little stumped as to why I can’t go so we’ll see what tomorrow brings. Question is has anyone else had bladder and urine flow issues post op ?

Doing ok most of my pain is due to the multiple catheters. No noticeable swelling after day 2-3 I get staples out tomorrow at incision site but worried I will have to get re catheterized if they pull the current one I have and I can’t urinate then they will have no choice to get another catheter

That totally bites. IMHO the catheter was the most annoying (but necessary) part of my procedure. I take a low dose of terrazosin at night for BPH maybe that would help things relax down there. Another med is Flomax. Ask your doc ahead of time.

OK, here’s what I’m going to recommend you talk to the doctors about. When they do the bladder scan, ask them to do a straight catheter to relieve the retention. Asked to stay a little bit longer in the hospital to give the urethra time to calm down a little bit. catheters “surprise surprise“ when left in for long periods of time can swell and irritate the urethra. A straight catheter will allow them to get in and out and allow maybe some of the swelling and what not to relieve itself. A huge majority of men get UTIs after the placement of a foley catheter. Have them run ua while you are in there just to be sure that you don’t need another antibiotic to help you out.
