How do I find if a doctor is high volume?

##Boston Scientific grants COE status at a minimum of 25 IPPs per year. You can search by city/zip code here:

##Coloplast grants COE status at a minimum of 30 IPPs per year. You can search their site by city/zip code as well.

Hi lasthope,

Thank you for this needed info. Fyi, Dr Gregory Amend will be moving to another hospital cuz his tenure currently at Mount Sinai ends in a month and his schedule for surgeries is full. But he highly recommended Dr. Leon Telis whom he says is high volume. But when I looked for him in both links you posted he has a COE on the Coloplast site but not on the BS site. Would you trust him regardless given that Dr. Amend recommended him?

In the appointment, ask for his exact IPP total for 2024 to ground the discussion. (I personally know he does 200-250/year.)
.

How do you know for sure he does 200 - 250 implants a year? Just by asking him wont necessarily be a truthful response.

.

Hey Macoza, his Coloplast COE status is definitely encouraging and typically reflects 30+ devices a year.

From his profile, it looks like he has about 2 years of post-fellowship experience. I’d just suggest weighing that carefully.

For my own peace of mind, I’m more comfortable with someone who has at least 200+ lifetime IPP experience and performs 100+ annually. That’s simply my conservative approach to a major surgery, and I know everyone’s comfort level is different.

For me, trust is central to the surgeon-patient relationship. If a stated annual volume feels too good to be true, I treat that as a red flag and keep looking.

I keep hearing these names very often, and this list sounds like an elite, high-volume club that you can consider for your research:

Francois Eid — NY
Robert Valenzuela — NY
Paul Perito — FL
Edward Karpman — CA
Jonathan Clavell — TX
Tariq Hakky — GA
Andrew Kramer — MD

For NY, I would also encourage looking up Robert Valenzuela at Mount Sinai.

If you’re paying fully out-of-pocket, keep in mind that Eid’s and Perito’s rates may be the highest of all.

My career was in medical/ surgical devices and I can tell you that COE certification should not be used as a definitive way to determine surgical volume or surgical ability.

Very good to know. Thank you.

In my opinion, the best way to find information about high volume surgeons is by digging around on this forum! That’s what I did!

Thats not really definitive. How would you go about doing so on this forum?

Btw, I'm scheduled to see a surgeon Dr. Leon Telis for a consult only soon. But he was recommended by a surgeon whom I wanted to have surgery with but he's leaving the clinic. I dont know much about Dr Leon telis. Maybe you can help me?

.

So, it appears you live in NYC? Dr Eid is in NYC and is a very high volume, well respected implanted. Do a search on this forum with his name to see many meant patient experiences.

Appreciate that list. The problem with these elites is that theyre expensive as hell especially when I dont have insurance. Would you know how much each of these guys on the list charges?

I saw an interview with Valenzuela in that he at times popped up jokes around the subject of sex/penile implants when he shouldve been a bit more professional. He made me feel uncomfortable.

Do you know how much they charge?

Sorry to hear that. I also doubt you'll get a good deal in Mount Sinai, NY if paying OOP. For cash pay, I've seen older posts in this forum where Dr. Clavell or Dr. Hakky charged in the low-mid 20s for in-office IPP procedures ($15k-$16k for MPPs). University teaching hospitals like USF may charge even less, but you might have residents operating on you. I would stick with the high volume club :D
