1) Several medical students came to my room after the operation but I never saw the surgeon.
2) They gave me discharge papers with an appointment scheduled for yesterday. The doctor apparently told his secretary to reschedule it but no one told me about it.
3) No information packet about the model number, specs and no wallet card.
4) I called the office one day last week and left a voice message when the pain was excruciating. A nurse called me back 3 days later.

My takeaway: Loyola needs to have better post-operative communication.

This is the major disadvantage of managed-care compared to private-business doctors. Private ones like Eid, Hakky, Clavell, and others will provide their personal cellphone numbers. You can call or text them anytime, and they will get back to you as soon as they can. Sometimes, in less than 10 minutes.

Franktalk is an immense resource.

Yes you could have had some better aftercare instructions but I also tend to cut the Dr and staff some slack. The world has become you have to stay on top of your own health care. What are the results of my tests, are they normal, what do I have to do, etc.

Dr's see lots of patients and i come from a medical family whose father as an MD could see up to 100 patients in a day.

My best advice is to stay on top of them. I personally wouldn't have waited 3 days for a response if I was in pain. A couple of hours yes but days no. The "squeaky" wheel....

The first 30 - 60 days are the most challenging but I can assure you you will be happy in the end.

I have not seen Dr. McVary since the surgery either, although that did not surprise me given how busy everyone seemed to be. Dr. McVary came down and personally talked to my wife afterward, which I thought was nice, but I did not see him myself. I did see the team that assisted at the surgery the following morning, who took a look at the incision and took out the Foley catheter.

I have used the "My Loyola" interface to send them messages, but they have been slow at replying to those also. Like you, I did not receive the wallet card and packet on surgery day. I did contact Boston Scientific and they did send me a wallet card and instructions, along with the sheet of specifications. The original packet is supposed to have labels for the specs attached to the wallet card though. I'm going to ask the Dr. about that today, along with some other things i have written down.

My first follow up is this afternoon. I'll report back afterward.

Before surgery I didn’t have many questions. I have more now.
I know that he installed an AMS but don’t know the model number. I’ll ask. Are there specific questions I should ask other than model #? Size etc?
When can I ride a bike again (tadpole style trike)?
He told me previously that it will not be ready for sex for several weeks. I’m hoping that today they explain what I need to do to operate it.
I’m not sure if they will “activate” it at this appointment. I wonder how they do that.

Write down a list of questions so you wont forget. They should have given you some cards from Boston Scientific that states exactly what was installed. Some body paid about $10,000 for the device so call your AMS rep and they will mail you the cards. They are good to have for the future. Big hospitals sometimes loose the small stuff like those cards.
