Penile implants usually "outpatient" ??

Postby Evinrude » Thu Jul 11, 2019 3:52 pm

For me it was lights out, stay overnight in hospital..like serious surgery. Any of you truly have this done as an outpatient ?

From AMS website...
The implant procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis. A small incision is made in the scrotum or above the pubic bone and a surgeon inserts all components through this opening. The surgery is performed under anesthesia. You may experience pain and soreness at the surgical site. It generally takes a few days to return to your regular routine of light activity. Physicians typically say wait 4-6 weeks before intercourse.

I have done it both ways. The last time back in June was an outpatient.

When I had mine done, Dr. Kramer kept me overnight (23 hours, which qualifies as outpatient for insurance purposes). He said that was his usual practice. This was over 10 years ago, and I don't know if that's still the practice, but I would guess that it probably is.

IMHO, it depends upon your surgeon and location. Mine, last November 8th, was outpatient. It should have been overnight because the discharge morons at Virginia Urology Ambulatory Surgery Center in Stony Point Virginia cared no more about my post-op pain and discomfort than the garbage men picking up your trash every week. I would have fired every one of them if I could have (and said so to both the Director of Surgical Services AND the VU CEO).

My only recommendation is that, if outpatient, you have your procedure as early as possible that day and DO NOT allow the staff nurses hurry you out the door as they did me, crying, eyes burning, mummy wrap falling off my balls and penis, not able to see, in mega pain.

I think the 23 hours is a common thing. I have a sneaking idea that it's easier to get the insurance to pay for 23 hours rather than 1 day. Even a chance they get a little more money that way. Lots of tricks & work arounds in the insurance world.

That's what my doctor did, too.

I think if you are younger and healthier they will just do an easy outpatient.

23 hours is considered as out patient in most of the USA. My wife has had several things done this way.
