Biking Leakage

Postby palace01 » Wed Jul 26, 2017 9:26 pm

Like many people, after my Prostate Surgery in Apr 2014 I lost my erection capability but regained at least 95% Bladder Control. Then in Sept 2014 I had 6 weeks of pinpoint radiation due to suspicious edges, followed by Implant in Feb 2016 and revision in July 2016.
A few weeks ago, while on vacation we rented bikes in Amsterdam. They were typical 'rental' equipment - heavy and clunky but we rode them for 3-4 hours.
This was the first time in about 10 years that I had ridden a bike and was caught by surprise in that for all of the time I was riding the bike I was leaking urine (fairly heavily). Each time we stopped for a rest I was OK and a couple of times I used the restroom to try and empty anything I still had, but as soon as I got back on the bike it started again. Once we finished I was back to normal again!

As I say I was surprised as I thought I had read of several people on this site having no problem riding bikes.
The other day I asked the Uro that did the revision. He did not seem at all surprised saying that bike riding was one of the most difficult activities for 'us' because I was probably not allowing the sphincter to close properly, AND riding involved abdominal downward pressure'

Anybody else had these (or opposite) experiences?

Hi palace01, I don't have an implant yet, but I am an avid bicyclist with concerns about biking after an implant.

I can't think of any mechanism whereby a penile implant could cause incontinence while biking. The urinary plumbing shouldn't be affected by the implant. Possibly the incontinence is a result of the prostate surgery as I believe that removes one of the two sphincters. That's why kagel exercises after a radical prostatectomy are so important, to strengthen the remaining sphincter.

Did you try bike riding after your RP but before the implant? Do you by any chance have an AUS (artificial urinary sphincter) implanted as well as the penile implant?

I know of a guy in AR that had an artificial sphincter installed at the same time as his implant. It had to be replaced in less than a year. I leaked "stress incontinence' for 7 years post prostatectomy. This year is the first year that it has been little problem. I don't know if it is because I am well trained to go pee before I do anything that I have to squat, bend or lift or it is getting better. There was a prostatectomy forum I was on a long time ago and most said not to use anything but a special split seat or there would be problems.

Thanks for comments, I'd never heard of an artificial sphincter. but I don't think I was unknowingly given one!
NO, I did not attempt bike riding after the RP until this ride.
Yes I did pee before starting as well as a couple of attempts during the ride to try and stop leakage
Yes I got very serious about Kegels after the RP.
As I mentioned, due to cancer cells found on edges of 'removed' prostate after RP, I had to have the Radiation treatment. The 'Specialist Uro' in charge of that treatment told me to wait until I felt I had got the best possible Bladder control BEFORE starting the treatment because the control would never get any better once treatment started - making me even more serious about Kegels as well as confident I was at least 95% back in control.
HOWEVER I have not done any Kegels in the past 3 years since the treatment
I do not know 'where' the urinary plumbing is but the thing about the split seat may be a clue as I can only guess that the hard seat of the rental was pressing on 'something'....

Post RP my leakage was pretty well under control until I got back on the bike. More short sharp type kegels helped that greatly, but still had very slight leakage when I had the implant done 2 months later. Haven't got back on the bike since then: and have suffered a sad loss of fitness as a result. Soon, though ...

Dave: I have done some fairly extensive bike riding without leakage both post prostatectomy and post imlant. WE did a Danube River bike ride from Passau Germany to Vienna in 5 days. a year after my prostatectomy and had nothing but perhaps some dribbling. Post implant, wife and I do one hour bike rides on our tandem bike about three times a week. Also, no leakage.
