AMS 700 MS or other Series recipients

Postby bclogan1 » Mon Feb 23, 2015 6:09 pm

Welcome to my blog for AMS 700 Series recipients. The intention of my blog is to make available and share as many experiences as possible for those on this journey and for those contemplating surgery. If you’re a recipient please share your journey and hopefully it will help others along this road. It appears many people have blogged about their experiences and they are scattered throughout the site. Hopefully this will keep it in one spot? I am very interested in hearing views on the new MS pump as its supposedly smaller and more difficult to use but auto inflation has been minimized, which is particularly useful since I still like to bike.

My journey started when I was 40 noticing things just did not work the same way when I was 20. I figured life sucked and procrastinated until my mid 40’s before starting to experiment with Cilas and Viagra, which seemed to work for a time. At age 50, totally frustrated I got the advice of a urologist and the first thing he did was checked my blood flow, which was at 16%, broken is confirmed. Following that we tried injections for four years, which for the most part worked but at the end, NOT.

The decision was made to go ahead with surgery, which I did 14 days ago.

My experience has been one of sever discomfort; Day one, made it home after a four hour hospital visit with moderate pain and able to stand and sit with difficulty. The swelling was moderate and ice seemed to give me some relief along with the narcotics.

Peeing was a new experience with a stiff swollen hard on, which is too sore to point in any given direction. I resorted to a bucket, which made the experience a little more pleasant rather then peeing all over the floor.

My foreskin, which I never really thought of as an issue., becomes a major complication with this procedure. As the foreskin does not have any fat its prone to swelling and swell it does. I can’t even see the end of my penis and the blood pools in the foreskin, gross and uncomfortable sum it up.

Day three, constipation and a bowel movement resulted in disaster. My testicles increased in size x4 and my foreskin became grossly swollen so you could not even see the penis other then everything looking like a small football. A small amount of puss was discharged. The pain was over the top.

I had an emergency follow-up apt with the surgeon who reported everything looked good and advised me to maintain bed rest, ice and drugs for another week.

A week after surgery the pain is well managed with Tylenol Extra Strength and ice. Any thought of sex at this point is nonexistent. My thoughts of wearing sexy underwear is gone, although I do realize I’m somewhat inflated for the healing process. I can walk about a half a block without too much discomfort. Sleeping on my side is not going to happen anytime soon.

My perceptions going into this procedure were I would be back working after a week, LOL NOT!

I am 12 days out from my surgery now and starting to feel somewhat back to normal. Today I walked for an hour and did a little shopping. The gym is in my next steps but I am awaiting clearance from the surgeon. The swelling in the morning is not bad and its actually starting to look like its old stuff down there but the shrinkage everyone seems to chat about is concerning as I was not really that huge at the start of this process at 6”.

My biggest issue has been pain with my foreskin, which not many people talk about but mine is extremely sore, particularly after long activity. Again ice gives me relief and still taking narcotics at night to insure a good sleep.

Anyhow, this is very much a journey and I am so thankful for all the others out there that are sharing, thanks again.

It occurred to me that some of you might not be aware what the MS feature is on the 700 series; here is a brief cut and paste on that topic.

(Momentary Squeeze (MS) Pump - AMS
AMS's Momentary Squeeze (MS) Pump was first introduced nearly two years ago, and Dr. Eid has implanted it with great success in patients suited to the CX-cylinder and LGX-cylinder versions. (The LGX model offers the potential for increased penile length in patients complaining of penile shortening after radical prostatectomy.) Both cylinders now feature redesigned proximal ends. At only 9.5mm in diameter, the ends allow for significantly easier insertion for patients with fibrotic proximal corporal bodies. The MS Pump's advantages include a smaller profile (which enables a more discreet placement) and one-touch deflation. However, this quality can result in operational difficulties with inflation (more difficult to get a hold of within the scrotum) and deflation (small button can initially be difficult to find). In addition, its new lockout valve has the advantage of preventing auto-inflation (potentially embarrassing and/or painful), but can at times make it difficult to initiate inflation. For these reasons, Dr. Eid recommends this pump for the younger patient with an average-sized penis.)

Tomorrow I test drive this new pump and hopefully it works the way its designed. I have been trying to landmark the magic button, no luck yet as the swelling and pain is still extreme.

If you like to read research papers you may find this link useful as it describes the pump in great detail. http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream ... 1251.x.pdf

This is an interesting manual, which might have helped me if I found it before my operation rather then the youtube videos. My question to the surgeon tomorrow is to find out what size of reservoir was put inside me? There are two types 60ml and 100ml and apparently more fluid equals a bigger hardon but I'm not sure? The document gives you some insight from a surgeons view of how difficult this procedure is given the complexity of the device. Anyhow I hope you find this information helpful; http://www.amselabeling.com/assets/file ... tready.pdf

The answer to my question was; I was implanted with a 100cc reservoir, which in cold environments can be an issue of getting a cold tummy :-) I learned about the tubes and size, which he has to find my chart to get the specifics.

It’s 14 days post op and I met with the surgeon today. The swelling is down by 50%, the pain is under control without drugs and ice. My first first shock was my new hard-on, which apparently is the new flaccid state. Hmmm this is a new look for me. I was under the impression that I was 50% inflated, NOT. Everything was too sensitive to start inflating at today’s session. Today I learned about feeling up the pump and getting use to locating the deflation valve. I was also instructed to pull it down a little to make access easier. Next week, with any hope I will start to be activated. I was also instructed to get that penis sticking up in the air (i.e. on the abdomen) for at least 4 hours a day. That’s going to be a challenge. I noticed on many of the other blog experiences many men had a strap, which I didn’t have, why I’m not sure?

For those considering this operation this is my pre op and post op recommendations from my learning.

Go to the gym and workout, squats and strong abs will help you with a speedy recovery from this operation. Getting in and out of a chair is new experience and strong legs and abs really help with the recovery.
Take a stool softener three days prior to surgery as post op bowel movement caused me lots of complications, which I encourage you to avoid any uncomfortable bowel movements.
Don’t use a laxative stimulant, very bad experience.
Drink lots of water post op as it will help with the catheter pain and get the waterworks going again.
Have multiple ice packs ready at home, 12X14 size and a couple of small ones for between your legs. I found this very helpful.
I used a cane for the first four days post op, very helpful.
Make sure your significant other is prepared to help you for the first four to five days, as I needed help with meals and getting up and into bed, actually I never moved off the couch.
Peeing is a new adventure as your sticking out at a new angle, swollen, painful and downright ugly, peeing into a bucket was a good solution.
Have a good antibacterial soup for washing the wounds and have a good supply of dry dressings.

14 days out I am back at the gym doing basic exercises and walking 3-4 miles daily. I am feeling better and more like normal. Unfortunately biking is not one on the suggested activities, which I love and is needed for my work. I’m told that is six months with a modified seat this could be possible. Apparently I have to pull the pump down and turn it sideways to accommodate the bike seat, ouch.

I hope this info helps those about to undergo the knife…..

So you went with Dr. Eid? Not too clear.

Did you have an infection? What was the pus? Drainage from the incision site?

Thanks William7. Sorry about the confusion, My surgeon is Dr Leone who has been managing my care. The puss was probably caused by a small infection from the catheter, which resolved with high dose antibiotics and lots of fluid to flush out the system. I took in 1lt an hour for three days. No drainage from the incision sites and they are healing very well. All my swelling was in the foreskin and scrotum, which is now almost resolved. The repositioning of my penis is very unpleasant but this is day one. Hope this helps you?

My doctor advised me to keep my penis pointing up for at least four hours a day. I have found this to be a very difficult task as my new bionic wants to point straight out to the sunset and the friction burns on my head are getting uncomfortable.

I found a solution on the net for a brief that deals with proper penis positioning, particularly for us post implant patients. It’s designed to fit a man’s anatomy perfectly with a cool mesh pouch for your sack and a vertical, tubular compartment that holds your shaft in an erect position. Its distinct design will hide all your erections, which is particularly important when my doctor wants me to walk around for a couple of hours inflated. Apparently this helps with length and girth expansion. They are manufactured by King Style and can be purchased at International Jock.

I hope this tip helps, all the best
