Help - implant post surgery complications

Postby implantguy » Sat Jun 29, 2013 12:25 pm

Hi Guys - implant surgery done on 5.2.13. Doctor implanted left side and when he went to proceed the right side, due to previous surgery and mesh from hernia surgery and other issues, the urethra had attached to the mesh and began to tear so the surgeon stopped the surgery. So all I have is a one sided implant. Experiencing extreme pain, burning sensation in the penis and scrotum area. Several visits to the Doctor and his concern is more on the urethra than the implant. ( I had an artificial urinary sphincter implanted in 2005 after prostrate removal). Penis points to the left, can't straighten it out, and has not been activated. In fact the Dr had to deflate due to the extensive pain on first visit after surgery. Currently take Loratabs every 4 hrs and it does not relieve the discomfort. Dr. now has me sitting in hot baths 20 min per day to help ease the discomfort. It doesn't help. Has anyone who had implants ever experienced this type of discomfort 2 months after surgery? From what I've read/researched this doesn't appear normal.

Any input anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated! I'm to the point I think I need a new Doctor. Hope to hear from you

Joe

Hi Joe,

I'm not a medical professional, just another patient. If I were in your situation, and unless your doctor has given you a much more reasonable explanation that you have relayed here, I'd be looking for a second opinion ASAP. And I really mean ASAP. And, preferably from a highly experienced implant surgeon. A number of the really top surgeons do see a steady flow of patients needing fixup from previous surgeries. From what I know, what you describe is not normal at all. Also, I don't know that much about pain medications, but my impression is that there are stronger pain killers than lortab (eg percocet). Plus, some medications work better for some people than for others. I would think it reasonable for him to treat your pain down to a manageable level.

Joe,
I completely agree with Rim.
Get a second opinion from a well respected and highly experienced Implant Surgeon ASAP.
I was implanted with the Coloplast Titan in December 2007 and never experienced the symptoms you describe.
Please keep us posted on your situation.
Best of Luck,
Bob

Thanks for the input guys, I knew there was something that just didn't seem right. Two months after surgery, constant pain and the Dr. saying what I was experiencing as normal just doesn't add up. I have been given the name of a specialist in Coral Gables and will be calling this week to see when I can get in. Hopefully my Doctor hasn't messed me up to the point where it cant be corrected.

Joe
