What should I know before getting an implant?

What do I need to know before getting an implant? What questions and concerns should I have with my surgeon before he implants me?

A lot. Keep reading this board and you will learn. Penascrotal vs. infrapubic. High volume docs vs low volume. I used a medium volume ( about 20 a year) because it had to be in state and he was recommended by Boston Scientific. Is insurance going to cover? Coloplast vs. AMS- do you have a preference? My doc thought the AMS was safer infection wise and used the penascrotal approach. Sizing is another issue. Anyway you get the point but you definitely want a doctor you feel confident about working on your stuff

Macazo,

Just dive down the rabbit hole. I was where you are now, 6 months ago. Lots of questions. Where am I now? First of all, here. Thank Gosh I found Franktalk. I'm going to be ok. So will you.

Valdekio,

Thanks for your input. I'm looking locally at a medium volume surgeon because of proximity. Bellingham WA. vs. Seattle. They have Coloplast, I'm leaning that way. They are working with my insurance to find my cost. Biggest decision now is do I ice with frozen peas or popcorn kernels? :P

macoza, there are a lot of considerations that go into the decision about an implant. Below are a couple of lists of topics worth reviewing :

I use frozen peas on my ball area where the pump is and a heating pad on the abdomen area where the reservoir is

I started out with a bazillion questions. By the time I spent a few weeks digging through this forum, I had zero questions for my doc. And now I'm happily implanted. Whatever you are wondering, chances are it's already been discussed here in multiple threads. Just explore! If you are curious about particular things, do a search. Good luck.

I actually knew nothing about implants except it would allow me to have erections again. Hadn't found Frank Talk, didn't do much research at all. I was scared enough because it was my first ever surgery as a 68 year old adult.
I think if I knew all the stuff I know now about implants it may have caused me to cancel. Happy I didn't and been enjoying the implant for almost 6 years.

Appreciate the reply. How old were you when you got implanted?

And I'm able to have erections in the morning. During the night also. But when I'm with my gf I'm unable to perform cuz I get nervous that I wont be able to which makes me less able to perform. I've tried injections but theyre too risky and make my penis feel weak. Pills help somewhat. This is why I'm thinking of getting an implant cuz with an implant I dont have to worry about pills or injections. Based on this, should I get an implant?

I was 59. I had been using pills for maybe 25 years. I was upping the dosage, and the side effects (especially stuffy nose) were increasing, but the reliability was going down. I could still get erections but I often got soft before finishing. I could get hard erections, but they were "fragile" and unreliable. Eventually I just decided that I wanted a reliable cock. Injections were completely uninteresting to me and I didn't even try them.

I can't say what you should or shouldn't do, but my situation was somewhat similar and I have been very pleased with my implant.
