Best Practice Cycling Technique

Just a few days into cycling and all seems to be going well. But it struck me today that my technique is a bit unsophisticated and clumsy.
When I pump it is somewhat hit and miss as to the quality of each pump. My surgeon demonstrated what to do earlier this week during my activation. I was pumping too quickly at first and his advice was to let the pump bulb refill before the next press. In other words don't go too fast. So I've been doing that, but sometimes I feel that I get one really good pump and the next one is halfhearted, or only a partial pump. In the end I am getting the desired result - a pleasing rock hard erection. Of course also accompanied by expected discomfort and post deflation soreness. I am experimenting with different ways of gripping the bulb and so on, but I wondered if there is such a thing as best practice for this. Or am I overthinking it and should just keep going and not worry about it? I realise that simplistically it's just squeezing a little bulb.
