First follow up visit

Postby Mr Timex » Tue Aug 16, 2022 7:33 am

The implant was done August 1. Today is my first appointment with my surgeon, the head of Urology at Loyola.
Before surgery I didn’t have many questions. I have more now.
I know that he installed an AMS but don’t know the model number. I’ll ask. Are there specific questions I should ask other than model #? Size etc?
When can I ride a bike again (tadpole style trike)?
He told me previously that it will not be ready for sex for several weeks. I’m hoping that today they explain what I need to do to operate it.
I’m not sure if they will “activate” it at this appointment. I wonder how they do that.

How was the pain? How long did you stay out of work?
Was it infrapubic or testicular?
Did you notice a loss of size and or girth?

The pain was pretty bad, like I had been kicked in the nuts, for a week. The second week the pain dissipated.
I’m retired so I didn’t miss any work. I didn’t engage in any hobbies for the first week. I’m pretty active now on day 16.
It’s been so long since I’ve had an erection, my penis was nearly an “innie”. It appears much bigger now but remember that it has not yet been inflated.

Good luck today!

I'd ask him where the packet is that you were supposed to get when your prosthesis was implanted. Should an instruction brochure along with a wallet card with the specifications. Might even be a CD something.
ED since using SSRI antidepressants. Unable to maintain erection sufficient for penetration. Tried PDE5's, VED, injections. AMS 700 CX implanted 8/1/2022, penoscrotal by Dr. McVary, Loyola medical center. 15cm + 1.5 and 1.0 RTE's. 65 ml reservoir.

Don't know your Drs. scheduling, but I suspect he will activate it at this appointment. My recovery was simaler to yours. My mistake was not asking questions. I expected an education from visits and I felt like I would be taking too much of everybody's time. Don't do that. If I were to do it over again I would write all questions down and address every one of them and others that come up as you go. I feel like if I would have engaged my urologist with a few questions he might have slowed down his busy schedule and address the issues. After leaving my initialization appointment I had no idea how much to pump up during daily cycling. Might want to ask in detail how he wants you to cycle. He will probably know how far along in healing you are to give you advice on what activities you can resume. I had about 10 days of pretty good pain, but once the pain started to subside it subsided at an amazing speed and healing started getting very good.
AMS 700 LGX on July 12, 2022. ED no diagnosed reason since teens with occasional success in 20s. Tried pills and injections.

I got there and found out that his secretary had changed my appointment to next week. Very disappointed.

They should have gotten word to you about the postponement. Not very good PR. Especially since you're coming in from Aurora.

Post operative communication has been very dissatisfactory. Even though the surgery went well the lack of contact has been disheartening.
1) Several medical students came to my room after the operation but I never saw the surgeon.
2) They gave me discharge papers with an appointment scheduled for yesterday. The doctor apparently told his secretary to reschedule it but no one told me about it.
3) No information packet about the model number, specs and no wallet card.
4) I called the office one day last week and left a voice message when the pain was excruciating. A nurse called me back 3 days later.

My takeaway: Loyola needs to have better post-operative communication.

I had my first follow-up appointment two weeks after my surgery.

At that appointment, my doctor deflated me because he had left me 60% inflated after the surgery. That was pretty much it other than him making sure I was healing okay. He told me then that I could slowly resume more strenuous activities.

He told me to schedule another appointment for four weeks later and told me just to leave my dick alone (no sexual activity).

My next appointment ended up being six weeks later because of how busy my doctor was. At that appointment, he confirmed that my healing was going well and I was ready for sex. That was when he showed me how to inflate and deflate. He had me show him I could do it before I left.

If I were you, I would write down all the questions you have and ask them at your appointment. Don't let the doctor leave without giving you answers. You deserve them, and he's getting paid to take care of you, which includes educating you.

The first couple of weeks were terrible for me. My surgeon didn't give me much instruction, at my 5 1/2 week follow up it was "go use it." Finding FT has been the best to learn what I should have done.
