All the recent talk about electric-powered implants got me to thinking:
The perfect electronic battery-powered implanted penile prosthetic erection device:
1) Time to produce erection ideally should be identical to natural fully functioning man. No more than 30 seconds should do, as I recall.
2) Control of erection: (in order of my opinion of desirability)
A) a biofeedback-controlled implant so no control unit would be required.
B) controller implanted in the body. Perhaps the base of the penis/implant, in the scrotum or at the wing of the liium just inside the iliac crest
C) operated transcutaneously by a magnetic wand (perhaps a ring worn on the finger) or a squeeze or press on a button by hand.
D) operated by smartphone, perhaps voice-controlled, e.g. "Siri, inflate to 75%" "Siri, inflate to 90%" "Siri inflate to 50%" Often, it is desirable to vary the degree of inflation within a single sexual session.
3) Usage time
In a single day or single sexual session it might be desirable to inflate and deflate multiple times to varying degrees. Battery capacity and speed should be able to accommodate that eventuality. So battery should be capable of inflating and deflating multiple times in a single session before requiring recharging.
4) Recharging frequency:
Multiple days between charges not an issue, as I believe daily recharging is not burdensome. But multiple inflation/deflation cycles in a single day (or single hour) is essential.
5) Recharging time: Overnight or 4-6 hours during the day by unobtrusive battery-pack that itself would be recharged in a similar time frame. Daily recharging, I think, would not be burdensome if it could be done while sleeping.
6) Statistics
Download of statistics from a smart device:
It should be manual, not remote. Data available to owner as well as physician, on a voluntary basis, to the manufacturer.
7) Mode of operation. Inflation by normal saline has been used for decades now. A different material might be used: The concept of an implant using magneto-electric material has been mentioned in the medical literature. A one-piece implant filled with a material that expands and stiffens when exposed to heat, a magnetic field or an electric field and stays that expanded and stiffened until exposed to a similar deactivating field or the field is turned down or off.
Such a device would combine the best features of a one-piece malleable penile prosthetic (one-piece installation, no reservoir, with less trauma to the patient and easier operation for the surgeon with attendant reduction in risk of infection and reduced operating room costs) and the best features of an inflatable (a more natural flaccid state with attendant ease of day-to-day living with the implant).
I know nothing of the technical requirements of an implant of this design, but consider this two-piece (battery-switch-prosthetic) device of my imagination:
Battery and control unit mounted in the abdomen with control wires running to the penile prosthetic implant. The controller applies energy to the implant, gradually, with increasing size and rigidity in increments. In this way, a penis could be at any degree of erection desired; merely tumescent for fellatio, fully erect for coitus and chin-up-bar rigid if desired. Control by biofeedback would be virtually indistinguishable from a natural erection. Control by implanted buttons next most convenient and control by voice-activated smartphone app would at least allow hands-free operation.

I applaud the current efforts to bring to market a better mechanical Penis, the future is organ replacement. Heart, Bladder, Liver, Kidneys, Dicks.
Bad News? I'll be dead. Our grandsons will enjoy life long Erections. thanks to science and a tight puss.

Lookingup. I have to agree. No need to wait for some miracle breakthrough. Even if it was to happen. It will be expensive & insurance won't cover it for several years. If not longer.
According to statistics, most of us senior members will be dead & buried before any of this gets wide spread use.
Younger members that choose to wait for the next big improvement will be missing out on many years of sex.

somebody should try contacting these guys and get some clarity of when they expect clinical trials to start.
I don't believe it would take a generation to get this technology out to the public, not even close, the science appears to be solid at this point, human clinical trials should't take more then 5-10 years. Seeing they already have produced human organs and transplanted them into humans, makes this whole thing far more plausible. This is the future of ED treatments.

too poorly. Confusing situation.

Oooh! I just had a wild-assed idea! All of the articles I've read mention decellularization of a donor penis to leave a collagen scaffold from which to grow the penis. Why not devise a means of 3D printing the collagen scaffold!!!!! Using a computer and a CAD system, the penis' collagen scaffold could be shaped, designed and printed custom to the patient's preferences or needs and then the scaffold could be impregnated with the necessary seed cells to grow the correct structures in the 3D printed scaffold!
No donor would be needed if they could work out a 3D printing method that used collagen. They have already gotten 3D printed edible MEAT products so how much more difficult would it be to follow a computer diagram and print a penis!?

The timeline is in the story. 5 years to human trials.
Then the length of the trials. Organize the data. Present it to the FDA. Get sent back to trials if there is an issue.
I can easily see it taking 10 to 15 years. Are you willing to wait for 10 years??
