My Initial Visit With Top Implant Surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Brady, Orlando, FL

Postby Cigar56 » Tue Sep 29, 2020 5:04 pm

Dr. Jeffery Brady is recognized as a top urologist in Orlando, FL. Among his specialties is a penile implant for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. On this forum and others, he is recognized as one of the best surgeons in the country for penile implant placement.

I sought an appointment with Dr. Brady to discuss my desire for penile implantation. For the record, I am African-American, 64.5 years when I visited Dr. Brady. I mention my race only to capture the attention of men of color who struggle with ED but may feel they have few people like themselves to share their struggle with. That said, I will share my struggle with any man with the same struggle.

On a scale of 1-100, my visit with Dr. Brady was 100. I came away thinking he is world-class at what he does. He was incredibly professional all the way.

I was super impressed that Dr. Brady had studied my situation. I had filled out a questionnaire provided by his staff several days prior. The questionnaire sought answers regarding why I desired a penile implant, the current status of my ED and my insurance.

When I met with Dr. Brady and his physician’s assistant, he greeted me with what he called an “elbow handshake.” I thought that was pretty cool given the current pandemic.

After a few minutes of small talk he asked me to stand with my pants and underwear pulled down. With a glove on, he probed my testicles and inspected by penis. I didn’t feel it was embarrassing -- just a part of the process as I move down the implant road.

Then he started talking about my situation. You could tell he had studied notes about my journey and my desire for a penile implant.

He provided the bad news up front. He said my health insurance provider, Cigna, probably would not pay for my implant. “You’re only eight months away from being eligible for Medicare,” he said. “Medicare will cover it.”

I pushed back a little. I told him about my struggles with ED, including prostate cancer treatment through radiation and how pills and injections (trimix) had not solved my ED issues.

He said he understood. Then I asked if he could move me from trimix injections to quad-mid and maybe that would help until I could get the implant. Then he surprised me. “I’m going to write a prescription for you for Penta-Mix,” he said.

I had never heard of Penta-mix. “Quadmix has four drugs, Dr Brady said. "Penta-mix has five.”

The followup from Dr. Brady was outstanding. The day after my appointment I received written notes via email reviewing our discussion, including our plan for treatment and next steps.

The next day a local pharmacy called me to ask if I was ready for my first prescription of Penta-mix.

I visited Dr. Brady because of good things I had heard about him on this forum. I just want to say again, I was incredibly impressed with his professionalism. We’ll see how it goes. As he said, I’m just months away from being eligible for implantation paid by Medicare.

I am anxious but I can live with that. Or maybe not. LOL.

Other notes:

Dr. Brady told me:

-- The penile implant surgery takes about an hour.
-- A slight loss of length in the penis is possible, but he works to prevent that.
-- There is a slight possibility, about one percent, of infection, which is a big deal if it occurs, he said.
-- I could pay for the operation myself right now if I wanted, and the price is about $25,000 out of pocket. (No thanks, doc.)
-- He told me the Cigna code for the surgery and urged me to contact Cigna myself if I was bent on proceeding ASAP. But he kept saying being this close to Medicare it would probably result in a no-go. He said some guys in my situation were able to upgrade their level of Cigna coverage and then were able to obtain approval for the implant. That sounded intriguing but I am not going to pursue that route. After all, I'm only several months away from Medicare.

So, based on this one visit, I would highly recommend Dr. Brady, and I am looking forward to starting on the Penta-mix injections.

However, in the interest of being thorough,I am also going to schedule an appointment with another highly regarded urologist in my area, Dr. Martin Dineen, in Daytona Beach, Florida.

For everyone going down this road, even if you are not in the Orlando/Central Florida area, I hope this helps.
I've tried everything -- pills, injections pumps -- and now I am at the final frontier.

Just had implant surgery on the first of September. Medicare and my supplement paid 100% of the cost. I paid nothing out of pocket. If you'd like to know more about the supplement I have send me a PM and I'll be glad to share

Dr. Brady and his staff are the best.
had my surgery on Oct.04,2019.
24cm with 1cm RTE
Dr. Brady explained everything up front with no surprises.
Surgery took about 2 hrs. and everything went well.
Went home and followed his directions to the letter,
Pain wasn't to bad and went thru about 4 bags of frozen peas
alternating as needed. Separatec underware worked great for support.
Follow-up was great but deflation hurt like a bitch, lol.
Started cycling after four weeks and good to go after 6 weeks.
This thing works fantastic!!! Lov it.
Pump it up it gets hard and stays hard till I deflate.
Wife loves it as well. I can get off and keep on going till she is totally satisfied!
Dr. Brady and his staff at Advent Health rocks.
Received implants 10/4/19 Coloplast 24cm + 1cm RTE

Keep in mind that Medicare will only cover 80 percent unless you purchase a supplemental policy, which will pick up the remaining 20 percent. You should weigh the cost of the supplemental policy vs the 20 percent coinsurance, to see if it is worth the cost. Some states have a waiting period for supplemental coverage, so ask if you will be covered immediately, and ask if there are restrictions on preexisting conditions.

If you opt for a medicare advantage plan (thru a private insurance company), you will not be able to buy a supplemental plan.

It would be a good idea to meet with an unbiased medicare navigator {call your local senior center} to advise you at least 3 months before you are eligible.

Cigar56,

Dr. Brady is right about Cigna. My urologist gave me the same warning because I have Cigna, too.

I first met with my urologist in February. It took until August for Cigna to approve my implant surgery. And that was with me being very persistent.

I'm only 51, so waiting several months for another insurance to kick in isn't possible. And I have Cigna through a collective bargaining agreement, so upgrading was out of the question. I was fortunate that as a part of my benefits, Cigna agreed with my employer to cover implants if it is due to a physical problem. But, again, it was months of fighting with Cigna before they approved it.

This was my experience, for what it's worth. I have my pre-op meeting with my urologist next week, and my surgery is scheduled for October 26.

I wish you the best--ED sucks.
