When traveling for surgery, how many trips are required?

Postby chris6546 » Fri Feb 07, 2020 2:48 pm

I'm on the west coast, say I want to have Dr. Eid do my surgery. How many trips to NY would be required? My understanding is at least 3 assuming no issues.

Pre-op consultation
Procedure
Post Op/Activation(?)
Potential followup visit (can this be done by local uro?)

Trying to get an idea of the logistics involved here.

Hi Chris,

My best advice email Dr Eid because he deals with patients from all over the world so I'm sure he can give you advice. I am in NYC and have had a first appointment with him and was impressed. Between that and what I see on Frank Talk he's the man. PM me if you do come east.

Lots of good implanters on the west coast. What is your back up plan if something goes wrong? I found my doc at USC while looking for a doc on the west coast for my back up plan.

Plan for one trip, 5-6 nights in total. I'm on the west coast too and my trip went like this:

LAX=>EWR stay at Bentley Hotel by Eid's office.

Tue: Arrival & check in
Wed: Pre-Op Consult
Thur: lay-over day required by Medicare, otherwise unnecessary
Fri: Surgery 6a -12 noon, back to hotel. Medical escorted required for discharge if solo.
Sat-Sun: stay in bed with ice
Mon: Post-op Consult, catheter removal & activation (if you wish), and discharge to travel.

Because of the 6+ hour return flight I elected to leave the catheter in and removed it when I got home that night. You really don't want to be getting up to use the airplane bathroom on the way home. Self-activated the implant the next day in the shower (day 4) with no problem. When to urgent care for stitches removal at 2 weeks. No followup care has been required.

I traveled from Boise to the west coast for my surgery, and I was thrilled with the doctor and the outcome. We talked on the phone several times, but I had just two total visits. The first was about 3 weeks before surgery. He did the stretch test, we talked about things in general, and he answered questions. The next time I saw him was the day before surgery when he went over what would happen, did a blood and urine test, and answered any final questions. The next day I was in the hospital. I stayed in the area for just over a week. My activation was on day 8 and he said I'd done fine with the things he wanted me to do after surgery and I could go home. Haven't seen him since (1.5 years), though we've talked on the phone. I hope this helps. Each doctor may be different. If you choose a doctor that doesn't do early activation, you might have to go back for that. I know some doctors don't want to "activate" (show you how to use the pump, inflate, deflate the first time) until up to 6 weeks after surgery.

FWIW, I went to Dr. Edward Karpman in Silicon Valley. I wanted a great surgeon that does lots of implants but didn't want to travel to the east coast. I also wanted "minimally invasive" infrapubic surgery. Karpman fit all those needs for me. and I'm very happy with my decision. I know there are several good implant doctors in the west doing either infrapubic or peno-scrotal, so you might not have to travel as far as you think.

Good luck,
Quincy.

One trip if you have to satisfy Medicare requires three days to hang around New York have some fun.Surgery Friday see Dr Eid on Monday and leave for home that’s what I did haven’t had any problems. It’ s been over a year length and girth is back to where it was. Dr Eid makes himself available for any questions great experience great guy excellent surgeon.

I personally wanted to be in close proximity to my surgeon during the post-operative period. Besides suture removal, I had some issues that required me seeing the doctor 8 times during the first 3 months. The surgeon I selected on the West Coast was not a high volume implanter but the fact that he offered to handle all aspects of my post-op if I decided to have Dr. Eid do the surgery convinced me that he's the guy for me. I'm very pleased with the care he provided and my results.

I gad a phone consult witnesses Dr Eid October 2014. After that I traveled from Atlanta to NY Feb 2015 on a Wednesday, had my first visit with Dr Eid, sight seeing Thursday, surgery Friday morning. I spent two nights at Affinity Gardens hotel and flew back to ATL on Sunday. I kept in touch with Dr Eid via email and phone but never saw him again. No issues so it can be done with a single trip. Hope this helps with all who have to travel.
