Dr. Rafael Carrion - Bait and Switch? Buyer Beware!

Postby SeaRover » Sat Dec 01, 2018 3:26 pm

Over a year ago I started looking for an implant surgeon in the Tampa area. After much research, I decided that Dr. Rafael Carrion was the guy.

I met Dr. Carrion in early October. It was a strange meeting. He said things that he reversed during the same conversation. He seemed rather odd. But I moved forward.

It took over a month to get a cardiac clearance. Finally the surgery was set for this Monday, December 3. Two days ago a notice was posted on Tampa General Hospital's MyCharts messaging system that Dr. Carrion would be doing the surgery.

I planned to spend today and tomorrow getting ready to be at TGH at 5:30 a.m. on Monday for surgery at 7:30 a.m.

This morning around 4:00 a.m. I checked the MyCharts system to see if there were any new message. What I found was message that the surgery would now be performed by a Melissa Mendez, not Carrion. Based on a Google search, Mendez appears to be a rookie, inexperienced surgeon. That wasn't the deal I signed up for.

I spent a good chunk of this morning trying to find someone who could explain what was going on. It's the weekend and this massive bureaucracy had no one who could help me. I finally located a person who told me that she couldn't help me investigate what was going on. All she could do was cancel my surgery. Since there was no one who could help and since I wasn't going to let an inexperienced surgeon do the surgery after I had done so much research to pick Carrion, I opted to cancel the surgery.

I am royally pissed.

When you choose to use Carrion, there are 3 organizations involved: the University of South Florida, Tampa General Hospital and Carrion's urology group. That's simply too many cooks. I saw almost immediately that the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing. Carrion has a young assistant who repeatedly told me things that simply weren't true. I had to find people at USF who would set her straight. They have a communications problem among the 3 organizations. What's astounding is that they changed my surgeon at the last minute and didn't bother to let me know. I think it's a mistake to use a doctor at a teaching hospital. During my appointment with Carrion in early October, a student observed, which was awkward when I pulled my pants down to let Carrion examine my penis.

I'm finished with Carrion. Changing the surgeon from Carrion at the last minute without calling me is inexcusable.

I'm already looking for another experienced urologist in the Tampa area. If you know of one, please let me know.

My advice is think twice before putting yourself at the mercy of Carrion, USF and TGH.

Now on Monday I face the daunting task of getting TGH to refund the money I paid them in advance for the surgery.

That sucks. You did the right thing! Thanks for letting us know. I agree it’s inexcusable. Complete bs. Better to cancel than possibly have your dick butchered. If you’re dead set on staying local or somewhat local I’d consult with Dr. Perito.

According to goggle search on urologists Melissa Mendez it seems like she has being working with Dr Carrion for over a year on penile implants and many other kinds of surgery. I could not find how many penile implants she has done and how many per month both had done. There really is not that much of a surgery for a specialists. I have had two and to me it was no big deal. First one lasted fifteen years. Revision lasted twenty months before I had problems with the pump. Getting it changed out Jan. 11, 2019.

Perito was my first choice, but he does not accept my insurance.

I'm sure my experience with Perito would have been much more professional (if it had been possible).

Being 73, having ED and feeling akward when one additional medical student is in the room while pulling your pants down ?

Being a medical student myself I do find that strange. It s not that we enjoy seeing old penis's :?

MrSkin, perhaps instead of finding it strange, it could give you some insight into how various patients feel and think and then how when you are w a patient how you might address that. Maybe it’s a generational issue you would do well to consider? Surely, you want to be not only a competent doc but also one who is compassionate, caring and able to best put their patients at ease as much as possible? Tony

I would be pissed too. Milam told me he would be doing my first implant with students in training. I expected students. Vanderbilt is a teaching hospital and I am 100% for education. I've never seen any indication Milam did anything. I know 3 students worked on me. Kramer told me he would do my surgery 100% himself. There we disagreed. I wanted students there AT LEAST to observe to learn how to fix a totally fucked up implant. He finally let a young girl assist but from the video, it is very clear, Dr. Kramer did 99.5% of the work. If I contract to buy a new Jaguar, I'll be damned if I would be willing to accept a Ford Fiesta in it's place. Sorry you have to deal with this crap.
LGX 21cm .Milam 01/13/16. Horror; both service and surgical outcome. hated infrapubic installation. Kramer revision 03/01/17. 22cm Titan +1.5cm extender. Those who think their opinion is the only one that matters are a danger to themselves and others.

After I cancelled my implant surgery Saturday morning, I said to my wife that the cancellation would not be communicated to the TGH surgery unit and that I would get a call around 6:30a this morning asking why I'm not at TGH for the surgery.

Sure enough, around 6:30a this morning I was awakened by a call from TGH asking why I wasn't there for the surgery. I explained that I had cancelled the surgery and I unloaded.

As I said above, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing in Carrion's operation.

Very typical of large medical centers. I've found that I, as the patient, have to manage and coordinate my own health care and ask a lot of questions because no one else does it.
59 yrs old. Gradually worsening ED for 10 years. Pills and trimix not working well anymore. Will need an implant in the near future.

My last visit to my doc before my revision I had 4 other assistants and a nurse looking over the doctors shoulders discussing my penis and implant. I have had my pants down so many times it just does not matter. I have had attractive young ladies ultrasound my penis and balls. Nurses putting in and taking out catheters. That is just the world of urology.

If that is part of the process to get my dick fixed, small price to pay.

BUT would only want my doc cutting on my dick.
