Those with infections, did you lose size?

The final frontier. Deciding when, if and how.

Getting an infection doesnt bother me. Its the fact that i have to lose size because of it that bothers me.

It is every man's worry. I worry about that all the time.

My only fear right now is getting an infection, but if you can get one and not lose size then it isnt really a concern for me.

First of all I have not had an infection. I take it you have not either. And I have not replied before now to as I thought you had one and were asking for others that had one in the past for advice. But it seems you are looking for information in case you do have one. So I will give you the my understanding of the information I have read on this.

First of all the treatment and outcome depends on your doctor. Some doctors do not put anything back in when they remove the infected device. If the infection is bad enough and is not caught early it can be a game over and can be the worst out come. So at the first sign of infection it is important to get treatment. The earlier this is caught then the better the outcome. Now this being said I have had 2 surgeries with out infection and there are others that have have more than twice that without. If the infection is caught early enough some doctors can even to a salvage wash out and re implant another IPP. And some can place a malleable to minimize size loss. But in other cases even the really good doctors cannot place anything back in and can only do a removal and wash out. Then they have to wait 6 months to try again. But in really severe cases then you are done and no device can be put back in. Those cases are very rare. This is why incision care is very important and following your doctors instructions are even more important. Some really good doctors understand this and yours developed the no touch method many doctors use for this now. The doctor that did my second surgery used this method as well as IV antibiotics prior to surgery. My first surgeon used a speed surgery to have me open for the least amount of time possible to reduce the amount of exposure to air born contaminates and would have a new surgical glove put on after every time he touched me. This is one of the reasons why low volume doctors have a higher infection rate as they take longer to place the device and you are open and exposed to air born contaminates for much longer. Neither my first nor my second surgeon made a second incision for a drain or anything else. So I did not have another incision to worry about infection. And these were the reasons I had both surgeries as I to was worried about infection. So much so that I had special under ware washed in bleach and sealed in bags to wear after surgery. And why I wipe my genital after I shower with alcohol wipes. And why I used dry beans sealed in new zip lock baggies for ice packs after surgery so there was no chance for moisture to contaminate anything close to my incision. And why it was such a difficult choice to have to fly half way across the US for a very good doctor. And why I am thinking of moving to live close to a really good doctor for my next surgery next year.

Now in regards to your other post about pain, do you have a fever? If so I would get to a medical facility to have a blood test for infection (high white blood cell count) and to get started on antibiotics. Or if you have redness or foul discharge from an incision. If you do not have a fever or other symptoms I would still get in to a urologist immediately to get checked. Could be you just did not stay flat enough long enough or ice enough and that like with a twisted ankle will then make for a longer recovery. But you need to have it checked to find out. The earlier you get care if it is infection the better the outcome and some cases have been resolved with antibiotic treatment and do not even need to have the device removed.

Best of luck to you going forward with this.
