My surgery yesterday went well. My wife drove us into NYC from central Massachusetts. Checked into a hotel that accepted our dog along with us. I arrived at Lenox Hill Hospital at 7:30 AM for the 10:30 surgery. All the professional staff were superb.
I admit to being a bit nervous about having a spinal, but the anesthesiologist settled that very quickly. Dr. Eid escorted me to the OR and directed all the staff. It was clearly a well practiced team.
I was in surgery for about 2 hours or a bit more. He took time following the procedure to speak with my wife, gave detailed information about how it all went and answered all her questions she had not asked me (it was her first time meeting him).
Around 5:00, as soon as the spinal wore off and I was stable on my feet, I was discharged, but the genitals were still numb. That wore off just as I got back to the hotel. I immediately took an oxycodone and an ibuprofen so as to be sure and get ahead of the anticipated pain. I also put the ice pack on and stayed horizontal as instructed.
I took another ibuprofen plus an acetaminophen with codeine at 10:30PM. I only slept a couple hours because I don’t sleep well on my back. I was sore, but wouldn’t really call it pain. Certainly didn’t approach the kind of pain I had when I had my rotator cuff surgery. Much of the soreness was due to the jock strap rubbing against the skin of my scrotum. I put a pair of tighty whiteys on underneath it and got instant relief.
It’s now nearly noon the following day and I have only taken ibuprofen and acetaminophen plus keeping the ice bag in place. I have no pain, no significant swelling and no bruising. I am even able to feel the pump and it seems to be in the correct position.
So far so good.
