You can always ask. Your surgeon will say yes or no.

Local would not be adequate but some surgeons prefer spinal for this procedure. But even then most anesthesia providers will give a pretty heavy handed sedation with it.

Surgeons don’t typically want awake patients.

But make your preference known and see what they say.

You can ask, but I suspect most surgeons would want general. As for me, the last thing I want during a surgical procedure is a state of consciousness. OMG, knock me out!

I had spinal anesthesia for my IPP (Dr Eid).

They walked me in the room. Monitors on. Connected the IV. Sitting in the edge of the OR table (they put in the spinal medication while you are sitting up).
I got some midazolam (medication like Valium). I don’t remember them putting in the spinal. But suddenly the spinal was done and they told me to stay sitting for a minute more so the medication would settle in the right area and make a dense nerve block.

Then they helped me lay back, started some sedation medication. I don’t remember anything else. Next thing I knew I was in the recovery room and peeking under the sheet to see the mound of bandages covering The Beast™️.

It worked out great and I would happily have a spinal agai. If you don’t want to be aware just tell them you want sedation as well.
