How old?

Postby Iowa6505 » Wed Jun 17, 2026 1:12 pm

Is there an age at which the implant surgeons balk at implanting someone? Obviously there are fewer of us to contend with ED as we age (a lot), but still enjoy the pleasure. Was approved 4 years ago for implant but BPH worsened and eventually required surgical intervention along with a few other medical issues. Now all is stable and would like to proceed with implant; but curious as if some of the more senior individuals on FT would be able to comment on how old they were for their initial implant. I am 78.

I don't have an implant, but would think that AI's answer to the question of age is likely correct:
There is no upper age cutoff for receiving a penile implant. Candidacy is determined by a patient's overall health and ability to undergo surgery rather than their age. Many men in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s successfully receive implants to restore sexual function and quality of life.
I'm in my early 70's. Serious problems with ED started in my early 60's. ED drugs were eventually not effective enough. Aquired VED pump and constriction rings in 2024 which provides usable erections for sexual activity.

I’m 73 and nine weeks post-op with my first implant. I would rank the pain and recovery as similar to a hernia surgery. Mine is usable now, and keeps getting better every week. You should be able to find quite a few men in their 80’s on FrankTalk who have had a first implant. Maybe it’s time to start researching surgeons and get a consultation.
Best of luck to you.

A good rule of thumb is if you are healthy enough to have vigorous sex, you are healthy enough have implant surgery.

Being cleared by a cardiologist for anesthesia/surgery is the main hurdle. Things that might prevent you from getting cleared are things like heart failure, chest pain and shortness of breath, problems with your heart valve like aortic stenosis. Having a heart attack or getting heart stents in the past year. Pulmonary hypertension. Poorly controlled diabetes or poorly controlled hypertension.

The best thing to do is make an appointment with the implant surgeon. They will tell you what they require.
