Day 2 Fun Facts to Know & Tell

Postby Txagq8 » Wed Jan 01, 2020 8:52 pm

If I were better organized I would do this as a journal with messages of deep meaning and eternal truth. If I tried that it would be at least as meaningful as your second cousin’s Christmas newsletter (the one where everyone gets a promotion, they safari in Africa, the daughter’s wedding cost 250K, and everyone has a new car.)

But that’s not my style. So here’s a few stream of consciousness thoughts from day two:

Ice is your friend.
Don’t plan public appearances unless you want to explain why your balls won’t fin beneath the seat in front if you or in the overhead bin on a jet airliner.
If you went home inflated, you are going to be very ready to be deflated.
Sore? Oh yeah. Pain is minor at worst. Bruising and swelling worse than expected.
Penis is shorter that it ought to be. But there’s no way to know how bad this is going to be due to swelling of area above dick (infrapubic incision). I’m thinking that once welling goes down, I’m going to be close to where I think I should be. A fraction shorter than original, but still plenty, and whaddaya know.... it gets hard. Girth looks ok assuming I’m measuring on a non swollen area. Angle is great. I always wanted an erection that pointed at about 1 or 2 o ‘clock.”
I need to find the nurse who ripped the catheter out of me and left my urethra feeling like hamburger meat and kick her butt.
Coming home with a drain in isn’t bad at all. Never having done that before, it sounded scary.
General anesthesia can wreak havoc on your body clock. I didn’t get to sleep until 4 am last night.
I know that a lot of folks travel to get to the best doctors but there is value in convalescing in your own home. I would not like to have flown anywhere today. But if I were flying out of Baltimore I would have gladly given Southwest the extra twenty bucks for the early bird check in or whined enough to preboard.
Yeah I’m paranoid about infection so have been taking temp every couple of hours. In 97s all day long.
That’s it for now. More thoughts later, mainly for the guys who are acweek or two behind me.

So you didn't have an opportunity to educate your nurse before she removed your catheter like I did mine? That sucks. It's really *REALLY* easy to make removal of the catheter a comfortable experience. I don't know why they don't teach it in nursing school or have a procedure set up in the hospital that they have to follow. It's like they think, "Do it fast and the pain only lasts a second." They're WRONG. Do it fast and you ensure at least one bladder void with bloody urine (hematuria) and a lot of pain for a day or two until the inner lining of the urethra heals.

No, Wayne, they did it while I was asleep

I’ll be honest. I really liked the doctor. But was not overwhelmed by nursing staff. This was at Seton in Austin.

Two weeks prior I had an epigastric hernia done at Scott and White in a Temple, Tx. They also have done both rotator cuffs and a bunch of other surgeries on me past several years (many due to self inflicted refusal to stop acting like I’m 20)

I’ll take the nursing staff st Scott and White any day of the week.

They’ve got me on Bactrim, pretty high dosage, so maybe my raw urethra is not likely to get infected.

I can speak from experience that the urethra should heal enough to not be uncomfortable in a couple of days.

In the past, before I learned proper balloon deflation method, I had a time or two with my urethra getting scratched. It gives a bit of urinary urgency and burning for a day or two and then it's fine. My urologist also scraped me up a little when he did the flexible cystoscope prior to my UroLift procedure. After I had the UroLift procedure, I was sent home *WITH* a 20 fr catheter inserted but I was used to 14 fr which is 2 mm diameter smaller. As my doctor knew I had practiced Foley catheter use (without prescription), he gave me the option to remove it myself the next morning (thankfully).
