If it's not in writing, it didn't happen. My opinion, anyway. Far too much room for either an honest misunderstanding or a blatant mistake. I had $38k in play and wanted a precise breakdown of anticipated costs for everything...the surgery center fees, the anesthesiologist fee, my surgeon's fees, etc. My surgeon's group didn't offer this proactively but when pressed by my inquiries they easily provided it. Was reassuring having this summary going in. In the end, the pre-op estimates only missed by $300. Get the paper!

Thanks guys - I appreciate the clear advice.

I finally found someone at my insurance company who *understood* why I wanted to get a written pre-approval. She reached out to my Drs office to get the necessary info on the procedure, and supposedly a written pre-determination letter will be in the mail Monday.

Absolutely amazes me that the surgeons office will take the word of the insurance company over the phone that the procedure is covered. I suppose they just plan on going after me for their fee if the insurance company balks ... but you can't squeeze much blood from a stone. The insurance coordinator at the office still seems dumfounded why I keep asking her if she got something in writing from the insurance company.

Thanks - I'll keep you posted.

This might be a case of "let the billing department handle it". As for getting blood from a stone. They can try really hard. Even if you don't have much money or income. Most people have equity in a home. Collector's can be really creative sometimes. Best to get the proof of coverage.

Ok guys I got the pre-approval in writing (well, email - but I think that counts). You would think I was asking for a letter from the Pope given how difficult it turned out to be ... but I got it. Full steam ahead.
