Airports and Syringes

Postby tarheelgwb » Fri Mar 10, 2017 2:58 pm

Gents,
just wondering if anyone has attempted airline travel with carrying pre-filled trimix syringes? i am traveling soon and want to bring along 2-3 prefilled syringes. i have an travel pack that keeps them cool and can carry that in my carry-on.

Will TSA freek out or require any doc on them?
thanks

The TSA isn't going to faint dead aways (gasp) at the sight of a syringes. Think of the tens of thousands of diabetics who travel with their insulin syringes — just like the ones we use.

I have a cooler pack for pre-filled syringes as well. To be on the safe side, I put a copy of my prescription in a ZipLock bag and attach it to the outside of my cooler pack. Have never had a problem. I always put my cooler pack in my checked baggage, but I'm not sure that makes any difference.

I've travelled multiple time with syringes in an ice pack bag. About half the time TSA looks to make sure the ice is frozen. But never any questions or trouble. My only problem is getting the ice packs frozen for the return trip - I think I've forgotten to get the bags out of the freezer twice and once had to have it mailed back to me.

I use a Frio pouch. Just soak it in water and it keeps your Trimix cool for 2 days. I have never had an issue with TSA.

That Frio pouch in the link does NOT refrigerate...just maintains room temp..maybe a little cooler, but not REFRIGERATOR COOL. If you travel with Trimix you want to keep it close to 45F.

I've successfully used a Frio pack for five days without refrigeration.

I would say that this is only true if you are at the max dose of Trimix and you cannot tolerate any degradation in your prescription. At room temperature the PG1 degrades about 5% a week. It greatly speeds up once the temp is 87 degrees or higher.
