bldoink I tried the 500 and then the 1000, as I recall the numbers. With the 1000 I had better results. I am interested in knowing more about the generics. Are you getting a prescription from a urologist? Please elaborate.

I'll chime in on that. Yes a Urologist will most of the time write the script. Some even order the stuff for you for a price. Some have even had their GP write a script. Mine was too cautious. To get it yourself you have 2 choices. Find and go to your( or have them mail the juice) nearest sterile compounding pharmacy or mail-order. Personally I found Edex burned too much and went for Tri-mix. I have a venous leak so it was all for naught.

Of the two main competing brands (Edex and Caverject) I'm more familiar with Edex which comes in 10s, 20s and 40s with the numbers corresponding to the amount of alprostadil in micrograms contained in the cartridge. I don't know what 500 or 1000 could stand for but certainly not micrograms of alprostadil.

I got my original Edex script from my urologist who subsequently retired. It was covered by insurance to a limited degree.

After my urologist retired I went to my GP, or PCP if you prefer, to get a new script and learned that my insurance had changed and it was no longer covered. That put it out of my budget. I did some research and found out I could get a generic version compounded by some compounding pharmacies so I got my GP/PCP to write a script using the Edex label as a guideline but much more concentrated (80mcg per ml) so I wouldn't have to inject a whole milliliter. I then found a compounder to make it up.

I've discovered that it's a lot easier to find a compounder to make tri-mix than it is a mono-mix, which is what a generic Edex or Caverject is. I've been asked why I don't use tri-mix. My new uro actually asked that. Well the mono-mix works great for me. Why add other drugs that may cause other complications? As in don't fix it if it ain't broke! The new uro agreed but he only prescribes tri-mix and from only one compounder, in I think Tampa. So I still get the script written by my GP, a new one as my old GP retired too. And I still get it made up by the same compounder I drive down and pick it up from in West Palm.

PS: When I first used Edex it burned and ached a good bit. That diminished over time and it's not an issue now. I do inject very slowly because if injected too fast it will burn, especially with the concentrated mix I have. Injecting very slowly in little pulses helps a bunch.
