Generally, after practicing pumping for a couple of weeks, you will be able to advance to applying a ring that maintains the erection. When you've accomplished this and feel comfortable, trying it with sex is the next step.
I'm in my early 70's. Serious problems with ED started in my early 60's. ED drugs were eventually not effective enough. Aquired VED pump and constriction rings in 2024 which provides usable erections for sexual activity.

Scott59: You didn't indicate whether you planned to use your pump with a ring or rings. That makes a difference in maintaining an erection. Getting use to using a pump, no matter what brand, is a fairly easy task. You need lubricant, a good seal and don't pump beyond what is comfortable - a little discomfort but no pain. I pump to that point and backoff the vacuum slightly. For exercising pump - release vacuum - repeat. Different member's posts on this site recommend different intervals and cycles. I do what feels comfortable for me.

As for rings, that a different issue. Starting with a ring scared the hell out of me...it looked so small I feared I could not remove it. Had a scissors standing by just in case. Turned out the size of the first ring didn't hold the erection and I finally would up using two much smaller size sings. Once well lubed and flaccid, I stretch them out a little and they remove fairly easily. Rings are something that you'll have to experiment with and that takes time. The first ring you try might not provide the erection and/or duration you want, but don't give up - try smaller sizes if necessary.

A couple of other words of advice using a VCD with rings:
- Remember the 25-30 minute time limit for keeping the rings on.
- Use plenty of lube inside the pump, on the rings and on yourself.
- Have a good seal between the VED and your groin. There are numerous donuts and seals available to aid in that if needed..
- I apply the rings to the VED before pumping for PIV and slide them in place when ready.
- Last, most important, make sure to keep your testicles from getting sucked into the pump especially if you are using rings. I hold them out of the way while starting to pump. Not taking chances as it can be very uncomfortable.

In my case, my wife did not initially like the feel of the rings and she felt that the erection had a cold feeling, but she did get used to it.

Hope my trials with pumps and rings helps you on your pump journey. Keep us informed.
