Postrate surgery

Have anyone had postrate surgery. Can you share your experiences. Did you have any incontinence isues? If so, how did you deal with it? Thanks

I’m in my late 60’s. I had RRP two years ago. Nerves taken on one side. I started kegals months before surgery. I experienced some minor incontinence, and still occasionally do. It is not, and never has been, significant. My understanding is that a very small percentage of RPP patients will experience more significant in continuance.
I do have ED, as a result of the surgery, but I manage it with Bimix, Furthermore, I’m still alive, and right now, healthy.
I’m confident I made the correct decision.

Hi superb_h,

As my signature notes, I had a Robotic Radical Prostatectomy (RRP) in late August of 2023.

I wish I had known of this site prior to doing it.

My father had PC, had an RP and died 3 years later after the C returned and got in his bones.

Since his passing, I watched my PSA very closely and when went it jumped above 4.0 in 2019, I had a biopsy that showed that I had PC. Since my Gleason score was rather low, I chose Active Surveillance and watched it for 4 years. During that time, I had 6 biopsies, 2 of which were performed by a renowned Dr in Pittsburgh that specialized in that area. I assumed he’d do my surgery if/when it came time to do that. On a regular basis, I saw a local Uro here in podunk Pa, which I am still seeing.

We (my wife and I) thought my Uro was great and trusted his judgement and advice. When my Gleason score broke 7, he told us it was time to do something about it and we chose surgery. Much to my surprise, he said he would perform the surgery using robotic assistance. Me being overwhelmed by the whole thing (and rather naive and stupid), I agreed because I thought that surgery would be performed by an AI based computerized tool. Dahhh! When they wheeled me into the OR, I saw my Uro playing with a joystick like a kid getting ready to play his first Nintendo game. I thought, Oh S#!t!

I was in surgery for 9 hours. They invert you with your head down, feet up to move your organs away from your prostate. This pushes fluids to your head. They almost stopped the surgery because my face got so swollen.

In hind sight, I wish I would have asked my Uro how many times he had performed the RRP surgery. I may have been his first. Post op, I did the kegels, but still, 15 months later, I have some incontinence issues. I still have leakage if I do a lot of yard work or when I have a couple adult beverages.

A friend of mine had his RRP surgery by the renowned Pittsburgh Dr and his leaking stopped after 10 days. Another guy I know, had his surgery in Cleveland. He was out of surgery in 45 minutes.

Don’t I feel stupid. That’s saying something for someone who graduated Suma Cum Lade, second in his class at college.

As for my ED, I asked my Uro if he was able to save my nerves that will allow me to get an erection. He replied “The nerves are not like a TV cable that you can see, you will know if you can get an erection in 6 months to a year“. Ugh!

So, please! Do your research. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to switch Drs and find the MOST experienced Dr available.

Sorry so long and venting my frustration, but I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through.

Good luck and stay on this site. These guys on this site are the experts when it comes to managing ED. They/we have lived it. I know my Uro hasn’t a clue what it is like to stick a needle in his dick.

Thanks! My Dr's name is Dr. Sotelo at usc keck. He has done over 2000 robotic postrate surgeries. Has anyone had any surgeries with this doctor?
