Thanks for the tip. When I finish my 14 day supply of nitrofurantoin, I may give that a try.
I played 18 holes of golf yesterday and survived it with no ill effects. We started at 5:10am so we got done before it got to 112 degrees.

My lab report today was a mixed bag. Better GFR, but horrible protein in the urine. (proteinuria?).

Creatinine was 1.59 = eGFR 42.
Stage 3a would be better at 45.

Sodium 134, normal 135-145
Potassium 4.7, normal 3.6-5.3
Phosphorus 3.5, normal 2.4-4.8

I seem to have far too much protein in my urine.
I'll have to look that up to see what it means.
435, normal 15-170, I don't think it's good.

I think I'm still anemic, but not severely.

I accidentally first printed out a report from May and the GFR was 26.
I almost freaked out until I saw the mistake.

Better GFR numbers is good. Protein in the urine is part of the kidney disease. See if your doctor can recommend a dietician to give you some healthy menu choices. Drink lots of fluids too!
They want me to drink lots after my treatments but can't have caffeine! That cuts out my iced tea, coffee or most sodas. Can't stand those sport drinks like Powerade/Gatorade, so I went back to my childhood and bought Kool-Aid. LOL

I went back and looked at the only labs that checked for protein, urine normalized and it was on 05/23. The number then was 1057. That makes me slightly optimistic since it's such a big difference. I also noticed that my GFR numbers have been in the 40 for nearly 3 years. No one has mentioned it to me, and I didn't know it was bad. I do now though.

That puts me in stage 4 kidney disease and at 15%, it's pretty much curtains.
That would mean dialysis or transplant.
Good luck getting a transplant.

I'd just like to hear from others who might be in the same boat.
I have severely modified my diet and have even lost 9 or 10 pounds.
I'm now down to 148 and am 5'9" tall.

I guess best case would be to sneak up to stage 3 which is around 31% kidney function.
I at least would like to not fall any further.

Aside from my afib, kidney function keeps me awake more than anyting else. bounced from 38-54. Was producing protein so I was taken off all NSAIDS and Lisinopril. Been taking those for years should have been told earlier to stop. Docs don't seem to tell us anything any more. I have to figure it out myself I guess. I have seen the biggest improvement when I drink water pretty much exclusively. Skipped alcohol, beer, sodas, iced tea, etc. Keep us posted. Good luck.

I still take Lisinopril for BP. I guess the docs will have to see whether I need to take alternatives.
My weight at one time was all way down to 133 pounds, but I'm slowly gaining some back.

Had sex this morning and I asked my wife if that constituted exercise.
Too damned hot to play golf today.

I wonder if the protein loss has affected my weight.
I guess I'll ask the kidney doc about all this when I see him.

I always thought sex was the BEST form of exercise! :D
Isn't sitting up and down in my recliner also exercise?

85 year old sex can be pretty vigorous.
I think it's also a nice stress test.

I hope you're doing all right with your bladder issue.

I saw my neph again yesterday. I was thinking that things wouldn't go well since I haven't seen a dietitian that they kept pushing, and I've been eating normally except for no NSAIDs, cola, beer, and minimal red meat.

He looked at my labs and also agreed if my numbers keep improving, I can go on living.

He was very happy when I told him I played 18 holes of golf last Monday, and it went pretty well.

We will do more labs before I see him in 3 months.
I am feeling a lot better that I was before.
