Even with meds, blood pressure too high... what to do ?

Postby Evinrude » Thu Aug 08, 2019 10:34 am

Now up to 10-40MG of Amlodipine/Olmes Medoxom (1 per day) and bp in the 146/80 range.... sometimes (as in doctors office) 160/82. Just a couple of years ago on half that dosage and typical home reading 118/70.

Weigh perhaps 10 lbs more than then, otherwise not aware of changes. Feel fine... not diabetic, never had stroke or heart issues (recent EKG [prior to penile implant] was "perfect" according to nurse. More excercise and weight loss would help some but suspect not enough.

With bp so much higher than recommended, wonder if I'm a stroke ready to happen ?

So far in care of GP....would seeing a cardiac specialist be beneficial ?

I was just gonna say, there are these doctors called cardiologists who actually specialize in cardiac issues. Seems to me that you should see one if you suspect a cardiac issue. You don't need to ask random strangers.

Since ED and high blood pressure often occur together, my theory was perhaps some "random stranger" here on the ED forum had a similar circumstance and could offer real world advise that helped them to lower their BP.

I have high blood pressure but it's successfully treated with pretty basic and thankfully cheap meds. I take a combo of Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide combined in one pill. The Lisinopril alone wasn't doing it but a small dose of the Hydrochlorothiazide combined with it does the trick. I didn't post earlier because I figured you were well past the simple meds point.

I take Lisinopril and Amlodipine daily.
When I get swelling at my ankles, I add Hydrochlorothiazide.
I still show around 140/80 in the doc's office, but usually not as high at home.

What I usually do is log my BP each day for a week or 2 to show the doc the real numbers.

I know I drink too much beer, but so far, it hasn't presented problems, but probably contributes to the HBP.

I'm glad generics are cheap.

I wonder what, if any number, would be the consensus point to start a drug regime if drug companies and their representatives and their influences were eliminated from the equation.

For my curiosity can you tell me the dosages in mg ?

See a cardiologist.

Don’t seek medical advice about hypertension on a web forum.

Although many people here have their own experience with HTN and medications that does not make them experts.

If you are concerned about having a stroke, you need the advice of an expert.

See a cardiologist.

Lisinopril/Hydrochlorothiazide at 20 - 12.5MG

I see nothing wrong with getting info from other people dealing with same or similar conditions. Sometimes doctors, if asked about a different med or treatment regimen, will say something like " Yeah, that's a valid treatment too, we can try that if you like". OR NOT! Doctors vary greatly as does their willingness to listen to suggestions by their patients. A good doctor will give the suggestion a try if it's a viable option or explain why it's not a good or better treatment. Some won't listen or even take offence. I like doctors I can have some sort of dialogue with. When it's all said and done either follow their directions or find another doctor. Remember, they work for you, unless of course you have some form of socialized medicine, then all bets are off.

I agree, my docs have always listened to my feelings about dosages.
I've never suggested anything radical, just tweaked them a bit.
Same with the Hydro--. When I need it I take it.
