I just received a Coloplast 3 piece implant. Are the full body scanners, metal detectors, etc harmful to the implant? Do guys request a pat down regularly to protect their implant? Thanks for the help.

I've been through them several times with no problems. A pat down was only required once and almost a like he knew he didn't go anywhere near my junk. :)

I was TSO for a very brief time. For sure the job was not for me. Speaking for myself I hated doing pat downs and the last thing those guys want to do is touch some stranger's junk let alone feel some sort of medical device. Made my skin crawl. Another thing is that girls pat down girls and boys do boys. No exceptions. Add to that supervisors are always on the watch for any improprieties. I don't know if there's much metal to set off the detector but I imagine not and the body scanners gotta be pretty low power so as not to irradiate the security officers.

Thanks guys for the information. So I assume the body scanners don't harm the implant? I do think my physician said an MRI could harm it, does anyone know about what to be concerned with that might harm the implant? Thanks

I've had several MRI's and have seen no problem.

Just got back from Cancun. Fully body scanners during both trips. In the first one, I'd accidentily left 2 medication pills in my left front pocket. The guy asked me what was in my pocket and I took them out and showed them to him. So it was a good enough scan to find those. He never said anything about my implant, though. They probably can tell they are there but are used to knowing what they are.

When I had my first MRI after having an implant inserted, I filled out a form while waiting, and one of the questions was "Do you have any of the following?" "Penile implant" was one of those items, so I checked "yes." They took me back into a private area, made a copy of my implant card (which I always keep in my wallet), then told me that they knew it didn't have any metal in it but they just were required to ask. Then the MRI went fine.

When I had a CT scan, the technician told me that she sees penile implants "all the time." :)

The comedienne, Tig Notaro, who has had a double mastectomy, no reconstructive surgery and short hair had an experience at a TSA pat-down.

While being patted down (including the fronts of her pants) the TSA officer and supervisor became discomfited, clearly uncertain what gender she was.

Tig made quite a funny segment on her stand-up routine out of it.
