The reason Viagra stops working?

Postby spooon » Thu Oct 11, 2018 2:38 pm

Hi All,

I wanted to ask about a topic I'm sure has crossed many a mind before but I can't seem to get an answer off the web. I was taking 25mg of the blue pill for 15 years with great results, then over the course of a week or so it just suddenly stopped working. Higher doses of 50mg and 100mg didn't work either. I am just gobsmacked. I even distinctly recall the 25mg working extra well a couple of days before the sudden change. So unfair!

My question is why does this happen? To those that have experienced this, do you just accept it as a tolerance issue? Did you get any medical tests done to see if something in the body had changed that might be curable? Has anyone ever got it working again?

I take injections now which work good enough but nothing beats the spontaneity of a pill.
42yr, ED from mid 20s. Currently trailing Invicorp. Single dose of 0.35 ml contains 25 mcg Aviptadil and 2mg Phentolamine. First injection gave 4 hour erection with half standard dose placing me at risk of priapism. Help!

Dear Friend,

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Medications work because they attach to specific receptors through which they create the effect. After a while these receptors become less sensitive and the effect diminishes.

The other thing is that just because you manage your ED the cause and the process of ED doesn’t stop worsening. I myself experienced sudden onset of ED myself basically overnight and same with the effect of pills.

You can try the other two pills Levite’s or Cialis and see if they work.
I see that you also tried injection which is the next step after pills. Just because injections are not perfect the first couple of times doesn’t mean you can’t get them right. First time my doctor gave me 25 units now I have been using 2-3 units with great success.

All the best!

Many thanks for your reply.

The odd thing is that it inexplicably started working better just before the sudden failure.

Also re your point about ED getting worse. I think it's more or less steady. My ability to get an erection and keep it is as good (or bad) as it was. It's just the response to viagra that has diminished.

I wonder if there's anyway to upregulate the receptors. I guess stop taking them would be the first step, but 1 year later still no improvement. Levitra doesn't work either. Cialis strangely was always the least effective of the 3 but since the sudden failure of meds it has retained its effectiveness the most. Maybe just by imagination because there was less to lose who knows.

The injections do work but I think they have two major downsides. First the practicality of finding a minute to inject, and second the blue pill makes me feel I am producing the erection which is great for confidence and libdo.

Short answer, the meds stopped working for me too. Urologist ordered a Doppler ultrasound. Injected with trimix would not get erect. I have a venous leak. You may look into that issue.
Sorry you’re having this issue.
Diagnosed venous leak. Going with injections rather than implant for the time being.

Can't be venous leak coz injections work 'fine' for me. Invicorp gives me 3 hours. Had a Doppler - all normal.

Viagra stopped working well for me over many years, upped from 25mg to 50, and eventually to 100mg - from 48 y/o to 64 y/o. Along the way I tried Levitra and Cialis with not much different effect and finally Stendra.

I am wondering if the fact that Viagra went "generic" recently and may be made in some place less than proper/ethical might be in play? You can still buy bad Rx foreign drugs from reputable places. Just a thought to try to explain the sudden change.

Other things that can drastically change your reception are other drugs (Rx and OTC) or supplements, like Sudafed for allergies or sinus issues among MANY, MANY others. What else changed?
NOT an MD. 71, M51 yrs, CenTX US. Inj since 12/2016, a yr after pills stopped working. Caverject for a yr. 1/2018 Tri-Mix at 30 pap/2 phent/60 pge @0.3ml, now 0.5ml 80mcg/ml PGE1. DE/Anorgasmia setting in since 5/2019, worse now.

I wish I could remember the exact term for it... it's been 21 years.. basically, your body get use to the drug and it just quits working. I started taking 2 tabs, with the doctors knowledge. He said, yup, some guys just have to take two. I will say that the date for my first surgery was already booked so he knew it wouldn't be a long term thing. :)

So the change progressed 16 years still devastating I know but I think it happened to me over 1 month at most and just prior to that it was working better than usual. I have thought hard about what else changed. I did start a trial of dexedrine (basically legal amphetamine) for suspected ADHD but decided I didn't enjoy the feeling. In certain situation I found myself taking the amphetamine and viagra just a few minutes apart as a social crutch alongside the better erections. Amphetamine is a vasoconstrictor and many users report temporary impotence which goes away 1-2 days after stopping. I hoped perhaps I just needed longer to recover but 1 year later there's been no improvement. I am convinced there's an explanation here somewhere but no idea how of whom to see. Maybe I have suffered a permanent vasoconstriction somewhere. I have had my heart checked out and there's no narrowing of arteries. I have thought about trying shockwave therapy which I gather has mixed reviews but has helped some respond better to viagra.
