How long for Revision

Postby Limpbizcit » Tue Mar 27, 2018 12:01 pm

Good afternoon.

A question for those of you that have had an infection and your implant removed. How long did you wait before you replaced the infected implant? I have a malleable with no intention on using it. My surgeon said wait 6 months but I thought some wait 3 months.
Age 47. ED for over 20 years. Diagnosed with Hypogonadism. Pills and trimix do not work consistently. Implanted with 24cm AMS CX 12/12/17. Infected implant removed and replaced with AMS Spectra 2/18/18. Implanted with 26CM Titan 10/02/18. So far so good.

I have not had infection yet. But I was advised pre-op of that possibility and that the wait would be 6 months for reoperation.

Take care. I really hope you have great results next time.

I was 6 months. The doctor said it would take that long for the are to heal enough to re-implant. Best wishes. :)

I had the Ultrex removed and the LGX done in the same day. But my Ultrex just failed to work after fifteen years of good service. So mine was not because of infection. So my revision was one out and replaced it the same time. Now the LGX is better for me. I really like the results of the revision.
age: 75 First implant around 2001, 59 at the time. AMS 700 Ultrex

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like 6 long months it is.

It goes by pretty quick... or at least mine did... I was probably 2 full weeks of pain after he took the infected implant out and the antibiotics beat the infection down.... maybe longer but only hurt for two weeks.

I have had four different implants by three different surgeons.

My first implant was an AMS 700 CX 18 +5 done by a prominent west coast surgeon. No infection, but implant was nonfunctional due to distal cylinder tips placed far short of the glans resulting in “floppy glans.”

I chose a different surgeon for my next two implants: replacing the AMS with a Coloplast 22 and later a Mulcahy salvage procedure finishing with a Coloplast 20. The implant placements were excellent, but both Coloplasts became infected. Then, at the recommendation of an infectious disease specialist, I waited a year with no implant to let the infection resolve.

I chose a third surgeon, Dr. Kramer, for my final (“Hail Mary”) attempt. After a year with no implant, my case was now extremely difficult due to fibrosis and penile retraction.

I am a surgeon, and I was impressed with his experience and trouble-shooting strategies. He recommended the AMS appliance for my case because the antibiotic is impregnated at the factory, not in the operating room.

Using special dilators, Kramer was able to negotiate the fibrotic cylinders and place an AMS 700 CRX (narrow cylinder) 16 +3. My postop has been uneventful, but it is too early to conclude there is no infection.

It is easy to recommend Dr. Kramer especially if you need a revision. With every implant and revision, I lost penile length and girth. In hindsight, I wish I had flown to Baltimore to have Dr. Kramer place the original implant.

I will post elsewhere my thoughts on AMS vs. Coloplast.

Pianoman thanks for the response. My question for you is, is there anyway a surgeon can tell if its a good time for the revision or is it a wait thing. I would like to get my revision done in October, which would be 8 months from the date my infected implant was removed.

Very happy things are going in the right direction. I too wish I had gone to Dr. Kramer first. Cheers man, and I wish you the best this round.
LGX 21cm .Milam 01/13/16. Horror; both service and surgical outcome. hated infrapubic installation. Kramer revision 03/01/17. 22cm Titan +1.5cm extender. Those who think their opinion is the only one that matters are a danger to themselves and others.
