5 Years Post-Op (31 yo patient/Titan OTR/Dr. EID) - Questions

Postby adsx8888 » Thu May 24, 2018 12:03 am

I am 31 years old and was implanted in December of 2012 by Dr. EID with the Titan OTR implant. The surgery went great and I would recommend Dr. EID to anyone considering the surgery. The implant is still working great but I can not seem to find much information about how to know when the implant is about to fail?

Lifespan numbers provided on the web are 5-20 years for implants in general or 8-15 years for the inflatable implants. I inflate 1-2 times a day so does this mean my implant should be failing soon? Will I just be unable to pump it one day or will it slowly become more difficult to use? I have read that the recovery time for a replacement is much quicker than the original. Anyone have any experience with this?

Any information on the questions above would be greatly appreciated.

I can not answer your question because I dont have a implant yet. Have you loose length or girth with eid?

My implant wore out and had to be replaced in 2014. I had no warning that this was going to happen; it's just when I tried to pump it up, nothing happened. No pain, no warning, it just happened. ("Luckily" [?] I was alone when this happened and not with my wife.) ;)

How long was it until you received your replacement and were up and running, ready for sexual int., David?

No loss in length(7 inches) and girth increased a little. If you go with a good surgeon I don’t think you have to worry about loss in size and even if you lose a slight bit isn’t that better than not being able to have sex? Can’t speak for his other patients but it sounded like most of them don’t lose size. I assume the same is true for the other well known surgeons in this area.

I am about a month pre-op but I asked this question and my doctor said most units fail because they don’t get cycled regularly and then malfunction after being stagnant and cycled.

This is one doc’s view as he also said most length loss is from the ED prior to implant and normally not seen in younger patients.

I plan to cycle twice a day once I’m bionic.

Dr. Eid's website states the opposite
"Life expectancy of penile implants varies from 5 to 20 years and based on past historical data and current available improved implants. I estimate that an implant placed today will most likely last 10 to 15 years. Several patients in my practice have a working penile implant for more than 20 years. Like any other mechanical device, the penile implant is subject to wear and tear and the more it is used the sooner it will breakdown. Average use of a penile implant is considered to be one to two times per week. Patients with larger cylinders require more squeezes of the pump to obtain an erection which can decrease the life expectancy of the pump and tubing connecting the penile pump to the implant cylinders."

That is why I'm confused. If the average use is 1/2 times a week and I use it 1/2 times a day then does that mean I should expect mine to last for a much shorter period of time? Also - anyone with a Titan OTR whose implant failed... did it fail right away like the gentleman with the AMS implant or were there signs of failure?

Also can anyone please explain the process of replacing the implant? How long was the recovery time the 2nd time around?

It's impossible to say. Statistics are only meaningful for a large population sample, they don't predict anything for an individual.

I believe the most valid factor on implant durabilty is how you use it and not the amount of inflating. If you have rough/strong sex sessions, it has greater risk of failure or deterioration

This happened in April 2014. After visiting my excellent urologist, who told me it needed to be replaced, I asked if we could wait until September as I would be on Medicare then. He said no problem. Inserting the replacement was easier than the first time as the "spaces" etc. were already there.
