crystallization of trimix

Postby newbie1 » Tue Jul 11, 2017 9:50 am

Hi:
I have a bottle of trimix which I put in the freezer right away after I got it from pharmacy about 2 months ago Yesterday I thawed it out and there were crystals at bottom of the bottle.
This is the second time in 3 years (about 20 bottles used so far).
1. How often does crystallization happen with trimix?
2. What could have cause it?
3. What can be done to prevent it?
Thanks

i have seen this occur with my script too. at that time i was getting quadmix (with atropine). the pharmacists thought the precipitation was due to over saturation with ingredients. i am now using 30/4/7.5 with good results. try swirling the bottle for a bit. that will help dissolve the crystals.

tarheelgwb:
I tried rolled it around and shake it for a while and still the crystals would not re-dissolve. So I threw the bottle out--wasted.

You will have to heat up the vial/trimix with very hot running water and then keep shaking and reheating until it dissolves again. It is a pain....

Then you will have to store it cool .. definitely not freezing ... and hope it does not do it again.

Does crystallization occurs only with freezing?
and does not occur with refrigerating?
If so, then it may imply freezing is not appropriate for trimix, yet many posters here freeze often and not too many reports of crystallization.

Never had a problem freezing..thawing....re-freezing...many cycles....no issues.
When problem occurs with precipitation of crystlals, it's with freezing. I assume it has to do with possible saturation of a component, indicating it may haven't been formulated properly. Just a guess.

Had the same problem with trimix. Could not dissolve no matter what I did. Called uro who called pharmacy. They said bad batch and happened twice before. They sent me new bottle. Uro said don't freeze just refrigerate. I get the new bottle from pharm and on the bottle is a sticker that says "freeze after use". Got to call the pharmacy direct and straighten this out.

Like rahod1 I''ve never had a problem with crystallization with Trimix. I have a vial in the freezer that was formulated in Nov of 2016 and has been through 5 or 6 thaw/freeze cycles and still as potent as it ever was. I am thinking a lot of the issues we hear about may be because of different formulas or pharmacies. Just my observation.

I don't follow the necessity of freezing Trimix! Simply refrigerate. Each time you thaw Trimix, you are reversing from frozen to liquid and in order to thaw you have to leave it exposed to the warm air to thaw or use hot water, a blow dryer or whatever which is changing the consistency. We are told in the beginning it is necessary to refrigerate to maintain the strength of the product.

My frozen Trimix is thawed in 10 Min at room temp! Keep in mind it's THAWED (still cool) not HOT!I then draw it up to syringe, put syringe in frig until use (usually right away or within an hour or two). Vial goes right back into freezer after drawing up syringe.
OK...I'll say this AGAIN>>>>FREEZING is the way to go. My trimix lasts for almost a YEAR with no loss of potency.
I have experienced some loss of potency in the frig after 2 months.
