ways to get a boner--what works for you?

Below is my list for ways to help get a boner. The "intro" is why I am starting this discussion.

The information that came with my prescription PDE5 inhibitor (Spredra , in my case) gives the following information: “It is important to note that Sprdra only works if you are sexually stimulated. You and your partner will still need to use foreplay to get ready for sex…” As a prostate cancer patient being treated with radiation and ADT (hormone treatment to reduce testosterone) I found it difficult, if not impossible, to get a boner. But I knew that if I didn’t get a boner, then the muscles in my penis would deteriorate and my potential for ever getting a boner naturally was going lower every day I wasn’t able to get blood into the penis.
With that in mind and for others who are struggling to get a boner for other reasons, I want to start a thread on various techniques for helping get an erection that I hope others will add to.

Dr. John Mulhall, in his book “Saving your sex life: A guide for men with prostate cancer” says that a guy has to keep having erections or he will lose the ability to have them because of lack of good blood flow. The catch 22 is that the treatments for prostate cancer tend to shut down the ability to have good boners and good blood flow. For other guys who don’t have prostate cancer there are other reasons for lack of good blood flow and lack of erections. Taking PDE5 pills (Viagra, Cialis, etc.) doesn’t give you an erection, but just make it more likely that you will be able to have an erection and be able to keep it for a while by increasing blood flow to the penis. Injections will give you an instant boner (if they work!), but for those of us who don’t have an implant or don’t use injections, it sometimes takes a little work to get things going even with a Pill. What I am listing here are ways to stimulate the penis, so that working with the pills (or not), an erection will start. The hope is that if you can get to having regular erections it will give your penis the blood flow and feed the muscles, so that when you want an erection, it will be easier to get one and also maybe even start having morning wood! Here are just a few tricks I learned to help get it up when I wanted or needed an erection. Working on having regular erections seemed to get the morning wood going which was a pleasure bonus.
Everyone is different, so this may not work for everyone. I’m hoping others will add to the list things that worked for them. Here is my list of ways to stimulate the penis to get an erection going (NOTE: none of this has been checked by a doctor, so care should be taken not to harm your manhood!):
1. ELIMINATING THE OBVIOUS: The inability of getting an erection is often a sign of something else physically wrong, such as high blood pressure, clogged arteries, diabetes, certain drugs, etc. If you are having trouble and are not sure why, then it is a good idea to go to your doctor for a good physical exam including blood analysis.

2. TIMING: know when your testosterone is highest and work with it. For most guys, the “golden hours” are usually from about 5AM to 8AM. My wife and I switched from having sex at night to having it in the morning. Often I get morning wood, but I still have to have a pill in order to keep an erection long enough for sex.

3. TOUCH: just taking a Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Stendra or whatever will not give you an erection. That was the misunderstanding when Viagra first arrived on the scene back in the day. It just creates a better blood flow to the penis to ENABLE an erection. I personally like my wife to gently stroke my scrotum. If things are not happening, I, or my wife, will sort of gently “bounce” my penis in my hand or back and forth between my thumb and forefinger. It should be fairly gentle so as not to damage the penis when it doesn’t have blood in it to stiffen it. Some guys find it helpful to have touch to other parts of the body, most commonly, the nipples.


4. POSITION: When in bed, lying on my back as opposed to lying on my side seems (to me) more conducive to getting a good hard, full erection.

5. DIET: You can Google for good things to eat in order to encourage a good erection. These would include coffee(caffeine); oysters (for zinc); chilies and curry; bananas (for potassium); salmon (for Omega-3); pork (for Vitamin B1); cherries, blue and red berries, plums, peaches (for anthocyanins); onions, garlic; resveratrol (in red wine), oatmeal, leafy greens, nuts (pistachios, almonds, walnuts); legumes; raw dark chocolate, pomegranate; watermelon; ginger. The thing to keep in mind is not to overdo any one food, especially the coffee and the red wine! (See http://www.eatthis.com/best-foods-for-your-penis)

The things you should avoid which diminish your testosterone and damage your penis (See http://www.eatthis.com/worst-foods-for-erection) include: soy, white bread and processed carbs, too much alcohol, non-grass fed beef, water and other liquids in plastic bottles, canned soup, high fructose corn syrup (in soda), farmed fish, microwaved popcorn, processed meat, dairy, pizza, and mint.

6. VISUAL: We are not only physical beings, but also have mental and spiritual capacities, which also can influence our ability to have an erection. In short, we need to be “in the mood” and we need to appreciate, admire and enjoy our body, which includes the penis. If you are somehow not accepting your own body, then start there to becoming more accepting of your own physical endowment.

Scientists have also found that we are influenced by others as our brains are open to mirroring what is around us. For example, if a person in the room yawns, soon others are yawning as well, as a result of the modeling and the mirroring of the model. With that in mind, some men find it helpful to have in their mind a picture of a good firm erection, either a memory of one of their previous good erections or having seen another man’s erection either live or in picture. Some men find erotic art helpful; some want to avoid erotic art because they feel this betrays their spouse or for other religious reasons. This point can be controversial.

7. STRESS: If you have been under a lot of stress or not getting enough sleep, try doing something relaxing, that takes your mind off your “stressors” or just take a break and get some sleep.

8. HYDRATION: Stay hydrated. Drink water. Avoid alcohol.
Prostate cancer age 65 with PSA 5.8. Biopsy Oct 2010. Gleason score of 7, 3+4 with perineural invasion. Stage II, T2cNXMX.
Jan-Feb 2011 radiation. Palladium-103 seed implant March 2011 (55 implants). Lupron treatment from Dec 2010 to Aug 2011 (8 months).
