Hi! I’m a 52 yo male who was diagnosed with hypogonadism, which means my body is not producing testosterone. This has been going on for 10 years and I just think the care I’m getting shoddy. They can’t get me up to normal levels because my blood work won’t allow it. I started testosterone shots 3 years ago. My interest in sex came back, but I can’t get an erection. It’s been 10 years and is humiliating. My blood work is bad so they can’t increase testosterone.

Now my red blood cell count has gone up and I had to quit testosterone shots. My interest in sex disappeared again and I feel just awful. Extremely tired and depressed. I’m supposed to wait another 6 weeks to see if red blood cell count goes down. If it doesn’t I have to see a hematologist.?Does this mean I have to suffer without testosterone forever? No desire? No erections? I feel like my doctor hasn’t been very good. I’ve only seen him once in the 3 years since I was sent to see him.

I’m concerned about the red blood cell count, what it means, does going to see a blood disease doctor mean there’s something serious going on? Can somebody give me advice? Thanks
52 y.o., HypogonDism. Testosterone injections. Rarely got erections. Cialis and Viagra didn’t work. Red blood cell count went up. Couldn’t get down. Stopped testosterone injections. Thinking of getting penile injections. Right now frustrated and angry.

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time. You definitely have a lot to deal with. Unfortunately I don't really have any advice on your specific issues as my issues are different but I sure can feel for you.

If you're unhappy with your doctor there is certainly nothing wrong with seeking another opinion. I sure would. Doctors aren't gods. They aren't even anywhere close to perfect. Even the best of them aren't infallible. Just don't burn any bridges if you decide to get other opinions.

After you get the blood thing figured out you should talk to a urologist about other options to treat your ED if you haven't yet done so. Alprostadil injections work for me.

You should certainly discuss your depression with someone be it a friend, minister, or medical professional. I pray you'll find the proper path or solution to resolve or at least ease your difficulties.

You definitely need a new doctor. Higher hematocrit levels are very common for men on testosterone. the usual treatment is a therapeutic phlebotomy...in other words, donate blood regularly and keep hydrated. What kind of doctor do you have? where do you live? You have a right to have a libido and you have a right to have erections. Both are VERY attainable.
Don't give up hope - give up your doctors!
Take a look at the Physician Finder to see if anyone is near you in the US

I live in Franklin, TN. I went to the phlebotomist once and my hemacrit level was a little higher even afterwards. A 56. I know that means something is wrong with me because they’re sending me to a hematologist but the way they are talking is scaring me. They’ve stopped injections, I feel horrid, and then on top of it scaring me with this hematologist. Now I’ve looked up hematologist and I’m freaking out. I’ve always had consistently good blood work throughout my life until now. I don’t know if I should be freaking out. They never discussed with me what a hematologist does, what they’re looking for, etc. I go to a hematologist site and see stuff like leukemia, kidneys shutting down, etc on my own. It seems like they would transition you more smoothly. I don’t know. I’m just worrying myself to death. But I guess that’s on me. Anyway, thanks for everybody’s previous responses. I’m trying to figure out how to use this board

Please create a signature. It makes things much easier to answer your questions without asking a lot of questions. Here's how you do it
Click on your name in the top right corner and select "user control panel"

Then under the big letters "User Control Panel" there is a row of words... select "Profile"

Then down the left had side of the "User Control Panel" select "Edit Signature" (You might have Create Signature or something. I don't know exactly what you'll get because I already have a signature to edit)

Most guys put something like what I have, but you can put whatever you want. Here is mine -
"AMS 700 (18 + 2 rte's). Implanted March 30, 2017 by Dr. Brock of London, Ont, CANADA. Great surgeon. Went in to septic shock and had to have implant removed April 29, 2017. I'm from Belleville, Ontario, CANADA. Appt. for consult for second attempt is on November 6, 2017... I can't wait."

Don't get too carried away with the doctor like his name, address, phone number, etc (anything that looks like advertising for him).. you can certainly say Dr. Jones (great Dr.)

If you need further help, please ask, that's what I'm here for.
