VIAGRA |

Hints from guys in the trenches... |
Take it on an empty stomach. The tradition of a romantic dinner and bottle of wine followed by rip-roaring sex is replaced by some careful planning. Have dinner, see a movie, then pop the pill. |
Oral Meds |
Chewing it is safe and it gets into the bloodstream faster. So does grinding it up. |
We've all seen them. These are the drugs we see on TV all the time - even when we don't want to. Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. Ever have a little kid ask why those two people are in a couple of bathtubs? The images conjured up by the fantasy of just what could happen if you take these pills are enticing. You'll end up in the tropics, rich, in great shape, with great teeth and all your hair, with a beautiful woman on your arm (I'm sure my wife looks just like that!) and then we'll slip into a private cabana and as long as we take these drugs, our lives will be nirvana. |
It peaks in intensity at about one hour. It is pretty much gone in four hours. |
CIALIS |
The reality is a just a little bit different. For most of us, the closest we'll get is sitting in a bathtub - probably by ourselves! Some guys think that just by taking any of these pills they will get an erection. Fortunately, it doesn't work that way. You still need sexual arousal and stimulation. |
This is the trumpeted "Weekend Pill". Unlike its competitors which have a fairly short half-life in the body, Cialis takes much longer to filter out. |
Ask your doctor about combining drugs. For example, take a cialis in the afternoon, then a viagra at night. |
Therefore, you have a much longer period of time when the drug is effective. Now, take the 36 hours thing with a grain of salt. If you have severe ED, the last 12 hours can be a bit tenuous as the drug is at its lowest level. |
For the vast majority of men, all they need are one of these pills and life can be pretty much back to normal. These meds are the first line attack on ED. These are all part of the same group of drugs classified into PDE-5 inhibitors. Fairly safe for the average joe, they give you a good window of opportunity to strike when the iron is hot - but don't think of your partner and an iron in the same breath, OK? And again, this is NOT medical advice. Talk to your doctor. |
It comes in the traditional 10 and 20mg doses with a fairly new daily dose of 5mg. The idea is that 5mg leaves you ready at any time. If you have mild ED, this is a good option for you. But if you have severe ED, this lower level is often not enough to provide great results. |
This is the granddaddy of them all. VIAGRA came out in 1998 and ever since, the competitors have been trying to catch up. It is the butt of all the jokes - but Pfizer, the drug maker, is laughing all the way to the bank. |
Cialis can be more expensive than the others - anywhere from $15-$24 a pill. Again, insurance companies only pay for 6-8 a month. As of now, no insurers pay for the 5mg daily dose. |
How do they work? Who cares? But if you were the geek who won all the science fairs in Junior High School (instead of hiding your boners) and you want to know the chemistry behind it all, go here. |
The most common side effects with CIALIS are: headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, flushing, and stuffy or runny nose. These side effects usually go away after a few hours. Men who get back pain and muscle aches usually get it 12 to 24 hours after taking CIALIS. Back pain and muscle aches usually go away within 2 days. Ibuprofen usually takes care or it. |
It comes in 25, 50, & 100 mg doses. Most recreational uses are 25 or 50mg. Hard core ED from Diabetes or Prostate Surgery usually requires 100mg. Some surgery guys are on a therapeutic dose every day. VIAGRA seems to be the hardest hitting of these drugs. For some guys, it may be too hard hitting. |
Side Effects |
Most insurance companies pay for 6-8 pills a month. It costs anywhere from $10-$16 per pill, no matter what the dose. So, get the 100mg and cut it into pieces - though Pfizer made it this diamond shape to make it harder to do just that. Buy a good pill cutter. |

Side Effects |
There are lots of guys who try to get their full 36 hours of this drug by drinking grapefruit juice. Apparently grapefruit juice slows down the liver action which breaks down the drug. |
LEVITRA |
The most common side effects of VIAGRA are headache, facial flushing, and upset stomach. Less commonly, bluish vision, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light may briefly occur. |
The third drug on the ED scene, Levitra, seemed an afterthought compared to the other two. But as it turns out, it is a very viable, and often preferable, option for many guys. |
While this drug absorbs OK with food, a really full stomach will slow things down, as will too many alcoholic drinks. Do it all in moderation. |
While it does not have the hard-hitting response that Viagra has, that is often part of its selling point. Why use a sledge hammer when a mallet will do the job? Many guys report fewer side affects with Levitra. It is often touted as working faster than Viagra. For most guys, it lasts longer than Viagra (reportedly for 8 hours or so), but not as long as Cialis. It has fewer restrictions with food than Viagra. For some reason, some men note better response early after prostate surgery with Levitra than the other drugs. |
Take with a large glass of water to avoid an upset stomach and reduce side affects. |
The most common doses are 5, 10, and 20-mg - commensurate with the degree of ED. Cost is about the same as Viagra at $10-$16 per pill. |
Muscle aches/cramps can be pretty painful if Cialis builds up in your system. Don't take it too often. If things start to hurt, ibuprofen is the best defense. |
Side Effects |
Do not use the sex drug, amyl nitrite (sometimes called 'poppers', 'amyl' or 'rush') while you are taking any ED drugs. Even during the sexual revolution, these drugs were not the best idea. |
The most common side effects with LEVITRA are headache, flushing, stuffy or runny nose, indigestion, upset stomach, or dizziness. |

AVANAFIL |
An empty stomach definitely speeds things up and increases the intensity. |
Avanafil is the first of the next generation ED drugs. It is in Phase III trials and in its final stage of approval. So, if it's the same family of drugs as all the others, how is it better? |
(tadalafil) |
Don't take more than every other day. Most guys notice it lingers a while. |
First, avanafil has a fast onset of action, with results in as little as 20 minutes. There are no restrictions on food or alcohol consumption It may be safer if guys are using nitrates. It has a rate of success of 83%, which in the world of ED drugs is unheard of. There are very few side effects. It can be taken twice daily, and it has less impact on blood pressure and heart rate than other ED oral drugs. In short, it is the ED pill we've been waiting for. It looks as if it may go to market under the brand name "Revive". More news as it becomes available. |
(Sildenafil) |
Zydena (Udenafil) |
(Vardenafil) |
Manufactured in South Korea by Dong-A Pharmaceutical Company (Isn't that the greatest name?) Zydena is another of the second generation PDE-5 drugs. It is taken every day. It most closely resembles Cialis. |

All three active dose levels were well-tolerated; the most frequently reported Treatment-emergent adverse events were flushing and headache and were mostly mild to moderate in severity. No myalgia, back pain, leg pain or vision disturbances were reported and no serious adverse events related to the drug were reported. |
Dong-A Pharmaceutical announced last November that it completed a 240 patient once-a-day dosing clinical study and the results were very impressive. Effectiveness was over 90%. Currently marketed in Korea and Russia, Zydena is also effective in fighting Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms related to BPH. www.medicalnewstoday.com reported: |
One of the biggest complaints with Cialis has been the common muscle aches that can accompany it. Zydena seems to have taken care of this. Zydena is a long acting oral med and, like Cialis, can be taken on a daily dose. It is slated to begin medical trial in USA in late 2010. |
It won't be like Junior High School where you have a boner you have to hide behind your books. You take any of these pills a few hours before you hope to get lucky and when the action starts, you're armed and dangerous. |
